Karen Vikke - I'm A Social Worker From Copenhagen Who Works With Kids With Disabilities And A Self Taught Photographer (Photographer, Denmark)

I started taking pictures I was also drawn to a simple style but it has developed more this way over time. I also play more with colors now and generally play more with my picture in the editing process.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I grew up in the countryside but moved to Copenhagen when I was 19. I work as a social worker with kids with handicaps. I have always been a creative person and I have tried to explore different kinds of art. It wasn't until about 7 years ago I started to photograph. I wanted to learn about it and gave myself the Challenge to take one photo every day and quickly I was hooked.

2. How and when did you realize your passion for photography?

When I photographed for a short time I really felt my passion for it. I gave it almost all my spare time the first 2 or 3 years. I was really drawn to it and I also seeked inspiration

3. How did you come up with this idea of taking photos of urban minimalism with your iphone?

I Think the IPhone talks to Me because I am not the most technical person and an IPhone is easy to use. I also really like that I Can be ready to shoot in an instant when I see something interesting.

From the beginning I was drawn to minimalism but have developed that style more and more over time and the combination of everything you Can find in the urban space and minimalism is great I Think.

4. What does your work aim to say?

I Think I want to create something simple and colourful and happy. Pictures that people like to look at and maybe sometimes makes them smile.

5. How has your practice changed over time?

When I started taking pictures I was also drawn to a simple style but it has developed more this way over time. I also play more with colors now and generally play more with my picture in the editing process.

6. What has been your biggest learning from your job?

I don't work as a photographer but I Can tell what photography has done for Me

I Think it has given Me a lot. I look at my city in a new way,-always on the run for finding new photogenic spots. Also when I travel I see new cities in a new way. I have also met a lot of people through my photo journey and some of them have become reel friends.

7. What is the common misconception people have about photography?

I am not sure but the most important thing I want to say about photography is that it is important to try to have fun with it. And try to see things in a new way. I really like the feeling that you Can create something beautiful by the things you see on your way.

8. How important is social media validation in your profession?

I Think it is important because you Can get noticed through that. The things I have done with photo jobs is because of my Instagram.

9. What are some tips you would like to share with amateur photographers?

I Think it Can be important to try to connect with other photo interested people and go on photo walks together. You Can learn from each other and at the same time have a great time. And also just try to do different things and sometimes photograph things you did not at first Think could work on a photo.

You Can get surprised when you later go through your camera roll. And then just try to have fun with it. It is really motivating to keep on going when it makes you happy.

10. Which is your favorite book and why?

I really like “just kids” by Patti Smith. It moves Me every time I read it. The friendship and the memories are described in a poetic way.

I am a social worker from Copenhagen who works with kids with disabilities and a self taught photographer. My goals in photography is to continue to develop and learn to see more things and also to continue to be creative. In my spare time I love to go for long walks, always looking for new photo opportunities.
