About the Series

You are an American Television series developed by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble. The first season which was released in 2018 was based on the 2014 novel by Carolins Kepnes featuring a bookstore manager, Joe Goldberg as a serial killer. He falls in love with Guinevere Beck and develops an almost toxic, life-threatening obsession.

The second season was released in 2019 and was based on Caroline’s follow-up novel, Hidden Bodies.

The cast, the story, twists, and turns make you hooked to the story. If you start watching the series today, there is no way you are going to stop after just one episode.

It is one of those series that have you involved so much in the plot that you always want to know what happens next. Like many serial killers, Joe Goldberg is not what he pretends to be. He is too calm and loving to be a stalker.

It feels like he has a dual personality. If he loves you, it is the most dangerous thing, you are doomed. He is just as dark, horrific, and toxic as a stalker and murderer can be.

He uses his intelligence in ways we cannot imagine. He believes love justifies everything. Working at a bookstore, shelving books he appears to be the perfect boy next door!

"At the end of the day, people really are just disappointing.”

-Guinevere Beck

Beck is an aspiring writer barely managing her expenses by living in an expensive apartment in New York. Even though she is surrounded by her best friends she feels as if she doesn't belong with them. Like other Rom-Coms, we have a boy chasing a girl.

He begins meeting her by accident and tries to make her feel special by making breakfast for her. What makes this series different is that for love, Joe feels it is his right to kill. He wants to remove all the toxic people from Beck’s life.

"Sometimes, we do bad things for the people we love."

-Joe

He stops at nothing, follows her everywhere, breaks into her home, and hacks her phone. Just what a typical stalker would not do. Joe likes to take things extreme. This unhealthy obsession makes the plot more intriguing. Beck ignores all the warnings and red flags.

It is as if she is a magnet for toxic people. Joe could not keep Beck in the dark for long and the first season had the most unexpected ending but it left the audience wanting more.

In season two, Joe is not any different although he tries to be. He moves to LA and assumes the identity of a man he later kidnaps.  He has his eyes on another woman now and begins falling into his old patterns of obsession and violence. He wants his relationship to work despite his past romance failure.

The Bottom Line

The characters are broken and messy. Each is looking for an escape. What makes You stand out is its intensity and unique storyline. You have not watched anything like this before. The show throws light on how we should be careful on social media as it is a breeding ground for stalkers. We witness the thought processes of a stalker attempting to cover his tracks.

The series talks about the liberties people assume invade someone’s privacy. The story is engaging and though some parts seem unbelievable, it still remains fun. It is a perfect series to start binge-watching today.

For everyone who is planning to watch the series or is halfway through, the third season comes on 15th October 2021.
