1. Aeolian Lakes : Wind Formed Lakes

When lakes are formed by wind activity, they are sometimes referred to as Aeolian Lakes. 

They are usually found in very dry environments and are also known as interdune lakes. 

It can also occur when rainwater collects in the cavity between the two dunes.


2. Artificial Lakes Or Man Made Lakes

An artificial lake overlooking the Himalayas. 

The Reservoir is the most common example of artificial lake. 

They generate hydro power, provide domestic and industrial water, and are usually formed by blocking two different bodies of water.

In essence, an artificial lake is a body of water that is always surrounded by land because the water is used for public purposes


3. Fluvial Lakes : River Formed Lakes

If the river flow is not straight and bends along the river flow due to uneven land topography, the flowing water can form several lakes along the way. 

This is known as a Fluvial lake.

4. Freshwater Lakes : River Supplied Lakes

They are supplied by the river and there is no outflow. 

The five most well-known types of lakes are the Great Lakes of Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.

5. Meteorite Lakes Or Asteroid Lakes

These lakes are created when a meteor or asteroid collides with the surface of the earth to form a depression. 

A few years later, precipitation accumulates in the depressions, creating this type of lake. 

When scientists study such lakes, they can get a lot of valuable information about different types of extraterrestrial objects.

6. Organic Lakes

These are very small and very rare types of lakes formed by the action of plants and animals. 

If a beaver blocks a river and a reservoir arises, this is a perfect example of an organic lake. 

They can also be formed when dams and coral lakes are created as a result of vegetative growth.

7. Permanent Lakes : Low Evaporation Lake

Permanent lakes tend to carry more water than they can evaporate, as they evaporate less than rainfall, especially deeper

8. Saltwater Lakes Or Saline Lakes

These types of lakes form when there is no natural outlet or where water evaporates quickly and there is a higher-than-normal salt content on the drainage surface of the water table.

The lakes are filled with salts because there is intense evaporation involved which produces a negative freshwater balance.

9. Solution Lakes

When rock melts and dissolves due to water intrusion and precipitation, voids or voids can form, and when precipitation fills the voids, lakes called solution lakes can form.

10. Temporary Lakes

Deserts can also contain small, temporary lakes in them, and with these types of lakes, the amount of evaporation is more than the amount of precipitation. 

The most seen Or known temporary lakes are those which fill up after a heavy rainfall or an unusual amount of precipitation, so when a small depression is filled up after getting a lot of rain, this can be considered a temporary lake.

11. Tectonic Lakes

These lakes are the result of multiple occurrences within the crust, including broken and bent crusts, faults and subsidence. Due to these things, diastrophism depressions appear, increasing the depth and size of the lake.

12. Karst Lakes

Lake karst occurs when these depressions are clogged with debris, and when the limestone roof collapses in an underground cave, long, narrow lakes are often found underground, which can be seen all over the world.

These lakes are usually formed when soluble rocks such as limestone and dolomite dissolve, and they can result in the creation of underground drainage systems with caves and sinkholes.

13. Wind-Deflated Lakes

When Winds over Deserts create hollows, they often reach groundwater that results in shallow, small lakes. If a larger amount of evaporation occurs, these can become salt lakes and wind Deflated Lakes.

There are millions of Lakes in every continent, every country and every city. Their formation makes their characteristics and their looks different from each other.
