Dr. Madhuri Agarwal - There Cannot Be Anything More Beautiful to Happen, Than Finding Your True Passion and True Purpose (Dermatologist from India)

YAVANA is not just my brand, but a way of life, a collective faith and trust of many. It’s a galaxy of thousand smiles that makes it shine bright. To my believers I say, it’s your smile that adds a mile - to my rewards, my excellence, my fulfilment and my achievements.

Tell us about your upbringing, background and journey?

I am a proud daughter of a self-made father and dedicated homemaker mother. They started with nothing where Dad studied to get his educational qualifications and worked at the same time to give his children a happy healthy life.

They both toiled with the vision to give us, their daughters (not only their son) the best and the highest education and make us independent for the future life. I did my schooling at a Convent school in the suburbs where I had the best of teachers who groomed us.

Parental support every step of the way helped me realise my dream of being a doctor. I had a middle-class upbringing where I was taught to value the basic necessities of life and cherish the luxuries too.

Why did you choose to be a doctor and decide what you specifically want to do?

Any journey is about purpose and destination, so has been mine. There cannot be anything more beautiful to happen, than finding your true passion and true purpose.

That’s what occurred when as a medical student I realized that instead of just curing ailments, I can go a step further and add beauty to peoples’ lives, and I embarked on my pursuit for it, hence my inspiration to choose Dermatology as a profession.

We salute your work during the pandemic, where did you get the inspiration to work so hard?

My parents have been my biggest influence/influencers/mentors. As I grew in my yesteryears watching my parents going every extra mile to add smiles to everyone’s lives, my passion and my purpose took seed. They inculcated in me the vision that life has to be more than what meets the eye.

For me then onwards, my pursuit in my field was never just achieving excellence in skills and techniques, but has been more of how much it adds value to the lives of those people who put their faith and trust in me. For me, it’s personalized for everyone. The way our slogan is, “The best in beauty, just for you”.

YAVANA is not just my brand, but a way of life, a collective faith and trust of many. It’s a galaxy of thousand smiles that makes it shine bright. To my believers I say, it’s your smile that adds a mile - to my rewards, my excellence, my fulfilment and my achievements.

It’s always my believers who reflect me and my efforts, not me. My destination will always keep staying ahead, because when it comes to smiles, still there are miles to go and promises to keep. And since the best can always be better, YAVANA and my journey are everlasting.

How do you expect digital health to grow over the next 5 years?

Digital health was improving at a steady growth rate but post covid it has accelerated multifold. It has made the healthcare sector more accessible to the farthest corner of the country.

There will be an increase in the technology wearables and artificial intelligence-related devices that would assist the physician to provide more accurate diagnosis and deliver better health outcomes at reduced costs. Digital health is already becoming a way of life for both physicians and patients and this growth will be propelled further in the coming years.

What are your concerns about Digital Health?

The major concern of digital health will always be about patient privacy and the security of their medical records. The empathy and human touch of physician-patient relations can get impacted negatively. Another prime concern would be any errors in diagnosis and treatment plan at times with digital health.

Can you let us know any one application of Digital Health in your country which has impressed you?

The development of the Apple watch for health applications is an interesting digital health application. There are multiple other apps that are on the horizon with the promise of expanded use of artificial intelligence that can be game-changers in digital health.

What is your message for aspiring doctors and the young generation? Which is the best medical college according to you?

We are fortunate as a country to have the benefit of multiple wonderful medical colleges. I personally feel that where ever there is an opportunity to get your medical-grade education, the student should take it up and put in their complete energy and focus to be the best. My message is to make compassion and kindness the major pillars of your personality.

The journey of medical school is tough, challenging and filled with struggles, but it is also the most rewarding and satisfying journey when you see the light of happiness and gratitude in your patient's eyes. You make lifelong friends in this journey, don’t hesitate to take their help and be there for each other as these are the bonds for life.

What does your typical day look like and what do you like to do besides work?

A typical workday is my happy, crazy day full of patient appointments (nowadays both online and offline) with patients across the globe, managing both my clinics, interacting with my team to keep them updated with the latest protocols and treatments, conducting training for dermatologists, giving media bytes and quotes,

developing patient education videos for my social media channels, organising dermatology conferences, reviewing new machines and products, making video content for dermatologist education and much more.

The favourite one that I fall back on to destress is definitely spending time with my son & of course, travelling with friends eg. just go off for a weekend with no phones on. The other thing I do is at least 5 mins every day at the end of the day just close my eyes and sit quietly for 5 mins alone with no noise or diversions.

I suggest most of my patients follow them take time out with their loved ones, read or do one activity that you just love doing but they don’t do it coz of work and life pressures.
