Dr. Prerna Taneja - I Really Aspire to Get the Concept of Holistic Health to Be Accessible to Each Human Being ( Consultant Oral Cancer Specialist & Digital Smile Designer from Germany)

Indian doctors are supposed to be the best, in fact, there has been a lot of Brain Drain because of various reasons in other countries.

Tell us about your background and journey.

I come from a middle-class professional family. Both my parents were in services and me and my brother had a very grounded upbringing - simple living and high thinking was the motto our parents believed in.

Very early I had decided to become a doctor - there were no career counselling options available in the early 90's, so the kids had limited exposure to the kind of possibilities that existed in the 90s world.

I passed my post-graduation from the prestigious Manipal College of Dental Sciences in 2002. It has been a lot of learning, evolving since then. Presently, I run a Super Speciality Multi Speciality Practice in Skin, Hair, Dental & Plastic Surgery under the brand name Clinic Eximus. The whole focus is quality services with Trust and Ethics.

Despite so much talent in India, why do people look abroad for treatment?

Indian doctors are supposed to be the best, in fact, there has been a lot of Brain Drain because of various reasons in other countries. In fact, in my batch of both medical and dental students, at least 70% are settled abroad.

Better facilities and infrastructure make people look abroad for tertiary level treatments, but this gap is now being reduced because of the new facilities being available in India now.

How important is super specialization for doctors?

In this ever-evolving medical world, where every now and then, there is new research, new concepts of treatment, newer technologies, a doctor's study in fact never ends with Superspecialisation. A good doctor who wants to give the best of the new techniques and technology to the patients has to be a constant learner.

What is your take on virtual methods of providing treatment?

Virtual methods are the need of the hour, in fact, Covid -19 has made us learn this important lesson. The virtual method though helps get medical help to the remotest corner.

The only downside is that not all cases can be diagnosed and treated remotely and it misses the humane touch of being in the physical presence of the doctor.

What do you think are the key differences in studying medicine in Indian and other countries?

The basic difference in studying Medicine in Indian and other countries is the ample amount of practical approach and exposure you get in India.  Since the number of patients is much more in India, you have a very good learning curve.

Which countries are the best for studying medical besides India?

The Best countries to study medicine are the developed countries where you get exposed and trained in the latest technology. this definitely helps the doctor in sharpening his knowledge and skills.

The new country coming up on the advanced educational level is Singapore.

Which is your favourite book and why?

Aha! A tough one. I Am an avid reader so it is difficult to pinpoint one of my fav books. I am intrigued by the genre of quantum Physics and Spirituality, Mind-Body Medicine. Some of my favourite authors are Dr. Joe Dispensa, Candace Pert, Ichiro Kishmi, Fumitake Koga, Dr. Herbert Benson.

Even though medicine has evolved to its present state of glory, we don't have a medical cure for nearly 80% of diseases. But THERE IS CURE in Body-mind MEDICINE - In fact within each one of us. Every Human Being has an innate capacity to heal themselves out of dreaded diseases like cancer too just by the right nutrition and right thoughts. It is just that these fields have been suppressed for economic reasons that we question these sciences as to how Body-Mind Medicine can actually help us relieve all our health and wellbeing issues.

What impact do you want to create in the medical field.?

I really aspire to get the concept of Holistic Health to be accessible to each human being. Our Health is in our hands - in our minds, in our thoughts, in the right nutrition. Just being mindful can help us achieve this.
