Movie Review: ‘Nomis’ (2018) - “Killings Of an Unhinged Psychopath”

Well, I am a big fan of crime thrillers, and everything about this psychological thriller is peppered with talented acting by the cast and here is why you should definitely watch this one because the final blow is what makes it a masterpiece so enchanting.

Synopsis

The story revolves around a weathered Lieutenant Marshall and his police force who along with a local vigilante are caught in a deadly run trying to catch a troubled man and end his dangerous scheme linked to years of female abductions and murders.

It is after the mentally troubled man has been arrested the actual trouble begins because a series of female abductions and killings still continue as new leads emerge and the case starts to unravel.

About the Movie

Nomis or also known as Night Hunter is a Canadian movie made in 2018 starring a talented cast - Henry Cavill known for his famous role as Clark in Man of Steel (Superman), Ben Kingsley, Alexandra Daddario known for her famous roles in Taken film series, Percy Jackson and San Andreas; Stanley Tucci, Dylan Penn, Brendan Fletcher, Minka Kelly, and Nathan Fillion.

The film received unfavorable reviews and had an approval rating of 14% with an average rating of 4 out of 10. Many critics concluded that the film was full of clutter, the editing, and craziness were badly executed with an overly complicated storyline. 

Critics who labeled or concluded the movie as that aforementioned definitely hold some value and because they are experts in the field of cinematography. However, I did have a few different views regarding the movie and will try my best to support with justifications or certain scenes that hit hard to excite me just enough.

Personal Verdict

The movie has a lot of unpleasant scenes, stories and is sensitive. As the dangerous scheme led by Simon unravels through traps in a basement, a whole lot of DNA is found of various women that were raped in this underlit dungeon and then killed mercilessly - all of these actions found to be stemming from immense childhood trauma, grief, and hatred.

The movie is centered on the character of a mentally troubled man named Simon who shows signs of childhood disintegrative disorder. His appearance and projection were just enough for me to feel disgusted and unpleasant in addition to every crime he had committed so far. But the point to be noted is his acting with all the drooling and slurred speech created a benchmark that earned its keep.

Though the roots of his disorder and motive for the crimes lie in his childhood - the fact that he was capable of doing it all by himself seemed doable as well as not because people showing signs of this disorder lose their motor skills which may be an essential aspect for one to perform such heinous crimes for years. 

However, that one symptom is not enough to justify he did not do it and all the way along with Alexandra’s character as a psychologist, her conversations with Simon provided clear hints he was capable of doing it all and was probably pretending as an individual having an impairment.

Another most interesting faction of the movie was Michael’s character - previously a judge, Michael stepped down from his position after his wife and daughter were murdered by a psychopath and left dead in his house pool. His understanding of predators and sex offenders is really interesting and felt realistic.

The experience he gained by working as a judge and the representation of knowledge of a psychopath’s psychology (how their mind works and what it says) feels accurate concerning the context of the movie.

The movie has many other surprising moments that will leave you wanting to know more. Simply put - Nomis is a good watch to keep you engaged throughout.
