T.V. Series Review: ‘Mieruko-Chan’ - The Girl That Sees “Them”

Source: IMDb

What would you do if one day you woke up and started seeing ghosts everywhere? Not like the ghosts in Ghostbusters but actual ghosts in their most hideous and terrifying forms. The kind whose mere presence sends chills down your spine. Today I bring you a horror anime where the protagonist has such an ability. Just an ordinary high school girl cursed with the ability to see ghosts.

Japan isn’t really fond of the horror genre that’s why you don’t see that many horror anime. That’s why even though you might see a lot of super scary ghosts in this one, there’s also a lot of comedy, ecchi, a slice of life mixed in, maybe to lighten up the mood and make it more watchable for all those who get scared easily.

Series Review

Miyuki-chan is the animation adaptation of a somewhat popular Japanese manga written by Tomoki Izumi. This fall we got a lot of new and quite eye-catching anime and Mieruko-chan was definitely one of them. This is a comedy-horror anime that depicts the narrative of an ordinary High School girl who tries to deal with the supernatural by pretending to be oblivious towards it.

First of all, the animation of Mieruko-chan has been very well done by Studio Passione. The details and the transitions between the more colorful backgrounds to darker, “ghostly” tones are top-notch. The art is beautiful and true to its source, especially the animation of the ghosts. Even though Miko doesn't even flinch at the sight of them, the viewers certainly might feel a chill run down their spines once in a while.

The plot isn’t the most complex one. So far it’s pretty straightforward without many sudden twists and turns. But sometimes, a straightforward plot is what you need. You don’t have to wrack your brain trying to guess what will happen next. What will happen next is that Miko will see ghosts and try her best to ghost them (pun intended).

You can just sit back and enjoy the comedy and if you get scared by the unsettling, creepy ghosts, there’s fan service to calm your heart down too. But episode 6 onwards, things are starting to change up a bit and might lead to bigger revelations and a few twists going forward. So, we might be looking at some better world-building in the future. Those who’ve read the manga, you know what I‘m talking about.

There are some feels mixed in with it all too. While watching the anime, you might even feel bad for Miko. Even though she’s a scardy cat and is always screaming in fear on the inside, she still tries her best to get through all the paranormal sightings while also saving her friend Hana from the monsters. It's like you’re watching this small trembling puppy that you just wanna hold and comfort.

The Bottom Line

At first, the anime and its plot might seem a bit bland and linear because of which a lot of the viewers didn’t particularly like the anime. But if you give it a bit of time, the story is sure to become more complex and a lot of new and twisty revelations are to come in the future. I would also recommend reading the manga if you haven’t.
