Tell us more about your background and journey?

Began learning Bharatanatyam at four under the guidance of Smt. Madhavi Chandrasekhar and then under Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam. Have been an independent performer, choreographer and teacher for the past four decades.

When did you first decide you wanted to pursue dancing and how did you start?

I did not decide. It was decided by my grandmother who initiated me into this art form when I was 4. Ever grateful to her.

Who is your favorite dancer and why?

It is akin to choosing one fragrant flower over the other. Many of them over the decades as they come with their own perspectives.

Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a dancer?

A dancer who is PROPERLY and COMPLETELY trained in Bharatanatyam can start with dancing in festivals organized by local committees, then move on to applying for national level festivals, apply for Doordarshan and other independent platforms, apply to be empaneled by the ICCR etc. However, since the advent of social media, Youtube and Instagram have given sufficient platform to those want to showcase their skills.

Is format training required or can one train themselves purely on the basis of talent?

I believe proper training can only happen through guided training in the Guru-Sishya tradition with a knowledgeable teacher. Talent is only useful when it is guided properly with sufficient hard work and sincerity.

What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring artists?

Surrender to the Art and work hard- Let success come to you instead of you chasing it.
