The Global Shift to Sustainability and What It Means for You

We are used to these terms like climate change, pollution, Global warming, and many more. Until recently in climate summits countries pitched the idea about sustainability which lead to the introduction of sustainable goals 2030. Many countries don’t have ideas about sustainability and sustainable products.

What are they? Why are world leaders and leading companies emphasizing investing in sustainable products to save the earth?  Let’s dive deep into what is sustainability and what are sustainable products!

What Is Sustainability and Sustainable Products?

The concept of sustainability means to use the resources efficiently without compromising future needs. It sums up the whole idea that we need to use resources carefully so that the future generation can use the resources which we see in the present time that resources are declining because they got wasted or not efficiently used.

Take the recent example of the oil and coal crisis which will get exhausted within a few years as most of it gets used by the world. Now the countries are searching for substitutes so that they can survive. Sustainability originated. Sustainable products are those products that provide socio-economic benefits without harming the environment.

If we take an example of fashionable clothes which we often see in the fashion shows and the celebrities wear once just to show the latest fashion trends. As a result, these clothes are dumped in the landfill which causes pollution. Instead, the clothes can be used by recycling them.

Why Is It So Important?

We see that our resources get wasted by our leaders of the country. If we talk about India after 200 years of British rule, many non-renewable resources were exported by the Britishers during the colonial rule for their selfish needs.

After the independence, the resources were not handled by the government which led to the deterioration of the resources. In the present time, we see that the demand for the resources is more, taking the example of coal and petrol but supply is less.

It led to the creation of substitute resources like solar energy and electric cars to save the resources for future generations. As it was not used efficiently by the governments due to corruption, bureaucracy. We see in the pharmaceutical industry they use a lot of chemicals to produce cosmetics and the leftovers are dumped in the river.

In the textile industry where the leftover threads are dumped inside the river as a result fishes get trapped inside the threads and they die. Our marine animals are getting extinct.

We set up factories for production and manufacturing because we have limited land. We use forest land to set up the factories. We often forget that the forest is the home of animals. If we snatch their homes where will they go? We use them to experiment with them which is leading to the extinction of some animals.

Single-use plastic is also talk of the town within the climate summits to completely ban in order to save the earth. It causes water pollution. The need for sustainability and sustainable products rose so that we can use them by recycling them which are also known as eco-friendly products.

What Can We Use as Sustainable Products?

In the ongoing discussions on how to curb climate change and adopt sustainability, there are some products that we can recycle and use.

Bags - All the supermarkets which provide plastic bags to customers or in shopping malls should stop and either suggest people bring cloth bags or give them cloth bags so that they can use them again and again.

Clothes - Clothes which we change according to the trend as we see in fashion shows. The leading fashion brands can reuse the cloth and make a new dress which we often call sustainable fashion. Instead of dumping it in the landfill, we can use it for a good cause.

Cutlery - Often we see that in our homes we keep our food in a plastic box or we eat our food on a plastic plate. Instead, we should use more steel plates or boxes like how we used to in our ancient times. Same with bottles to we should use bottles of steel or glass. Say no to plastic.

Toothbrushes - We should use more bamboo toothbrushes instead of using plastic ones. They are eco-friendly and sustainable.

Organic towels - Organic fair trade towels are constructed with cotton that uses sustainable farming methods to grow and pick the cotton. The more of these eco-friendly products you can use, the better it will be for our planet, sea life, and more.

Conclusion

“There is no planet B” it's an alarming time that we need to save our earth from dangerous consequences. As humans, we need to think more about other species rather than being selfish.
