Movie Review: “Shershaah” – ‘A Worshipful Tribute to a War hero’

Shershaah translated as ‘Lion King’ is an Indian biographical war film, which follows the life of Param Vir Chakra-awardee Captain Vikram Batra from his first posting in the army to his death in the Kargil war. It was released on 12 August 2021.

Synopsis – Spoiler Alert!

The movie begins with Vishal Batra, Vikram’s brother narrating the story of his life in front of a live audience. A young Vikram is shown playing cricket, where he gets into a fight with boys senior to him demonstrating his fearless nature.

A television series called Param Vir Chakra inspires him to join the Indian Army. He is shown to have patriotism and has a strong desire to join the army.

When he turns 23, he gets selected in the army. Initially, he shares a bitter relationship with his Lieutenant ‘Jimmy’ Jamwal, but gradually they become friends as ‘Jimmy’ becomes aware of Vikram’s patriotism. 

While at his camp, Vikram receives a letter from his girlfriend, Dimple Cheema. The film flashes back in the past, and both of them start dating each other. Then both of them spend time together and get to know each other, during which they decide to get married. However, Dimple’s father is against their marriage due to caste differences.

Then Dimple and Vikram have a fight over their future.

Then Vikram has to go back as the war between India and Pakistan has begun and he tells his friend Sunny that either he will win and come back or die and come back.

While all are at the base, suddenly Pakistanis start firing over the base and many soldiers including Major Jassi are killed during that. Vikram is assigned the codename Shershaah and victory signal ‘Ye Dil mange more!’. Jimmy and Vikram successfully capture point 5140.

Batra becomes the Captain. Then they begin the attempt to capture point 4875. During the firing, Vikram is shot and while he lies on the ground wounded, he sees his soldiers capturing point 4875 and raising the Indian flag. He succumbs to his injuries.

In the end, his funeral is shown and Dimple is shown to have been broken completely and she cries inconsolably.

About the Director

Vishnuvardhan is an Indian film director who predominantly works in the Tamil film industry. He was born on 6 December 1976. He has directed many movies like Arinthum Ariyamalum, Pattiyal, Billa, Panjaa.

Personal Opinion

The film is really a good watch. It shows the life of Indian soldiers as to how they lead such difficult lives. They are strong and fearless men. They have patriotism inculcated in them. They have the spirit of giving even their own lives for the motherland.

This film also inspires us to have great respect for our motherland and also respect the sacrifices that Indian soldiers make for this country. This film arises the feelings of patriotism in us.

The Indian soldiers are the real heroes in life as they sacrifice their own lives for the country. 

Also, this film shows the true love that Vikram and Dimple had between them. Dimple remains unmarried to date which shows her respect and love for Vikram.

In a Nutshell

This is an emotional film with love, comedy, and action. This film is the story of a Kargil war hero. I would highly recommend everyone to watch this film and the actors have done full justice to their roles.
