Here is a compiled list of 6 amazing, budget-friendly destinations for you to backpack in 2022.
Sri Lanka
Starting close to home, Sri Lanka is a tropical wonderland to explore. With magnificent lighthouses, gorgeous beaches and intricate temples to explore and delicious cuisines to try, a week-long adventure in Sri Lanka could be a perfect getaway.
With readily available flights to Colombo, Sri Lanka is very accessible and even provides Indian Nationals Visa on Arrival (Rs.1000). It is one of the cheapest and easiest countries to travel in Southern Asia.
Thailand
Thailand is a Backpacker’s dream situated right in our neighbourhood. Going to Bangkok for its cheap shopping and happening night-life is probably the most common first international trip for most Indians.
Thailand is perfect for a relaxing vacation involving lying on beaches and getting pampered with massages, as well as for a jam-packed adventurous getaway including action-sports and exploring unexplored locations.
Apart from Bangkok, Thailand also has a sleuth of other smaller cities and islands to offer - Koh Samui, Krabi, Phuket etc. Thailand can be explored as cheaply or as extravagantly as one wants, catering to almost everyone’s budgets.
Vietnam Laos and Cambodia
To round up the other popular backpacking destinations of South-Asia, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, along with Thailand, are supposed to be some of the most easy countries to backpack as a novice.
With amazing local cuisines, pristine beaches, ancient temples, hospitable people and cheap accommodation, it is very difficult to not have a great time in this region. From experiencing the heritage of Angkor Wat in Cambodia to road-tripping up the Ho Chi Minh Highway in Vietnam, the region is jam packed with things to do.
The region is fairly easy to reach to, has safe and economical options for accommodations and is very popular amongst other backpackers- making it a great destination to meet new people and make friends.
Myanmar
Often overshadowed by the more popular South East Asian countries or India, Myanmar is a great alternative for people looking to travel Southern Asia but not be surrounded with hordes of tourists.
The country is the home of floating villages, immersive jungle treks and innumerable Pagodas, the country is relatively untouched and provides amazingly authentic experiences.
With prices being even lower than the South Asian counterparts, being easy to get to, and having a very welcoming population, Myanmar is definitely a diamond in the rough.
Turkey
Being in the junction of Asia and Europe, Turkey is a one of a kind place to visit and travel through. With stark Asian and European influences visible, going through Istanbul is an unique experience.
From riding on Hot Air balloons in Cappadocia or shopping in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey is filled with things to check off your bucket list. The country also boasts of having delicious local dishes and cuisines.
While it is definitely not the cheapest country to visit on this list, with the surge in backpackers, very affordable food and housing options are widely available. Turkey can be your perfect gateway to Europe!
Colombia
Colombia is a hidden gem of a country to visit in Latin America. It is a more off the beaten path destination, but can be a treasure trove of wonderful unique experiences.
Ideal for experienced backpackers, the country is best explored with a month-long holiday to make the best use of all the Backpacking hotspots- Bogota, Cali, Salento and more. With amazing street food, great hikes, serene beaches, there are no dearth of things to do in Colombia.
It can be a bit difficult and expensive to access the country, the predominantly spoken language is Spanish and the country as a whole is not as safe as some of its western counterparts.
For adventurous, experienced travellers looking to visit a completely new and cheap destination, Colombia can be the perfect solution.
Being able to explore the world is an extremely real possibility. With careful budgeting, being financially savvy and pre-planning the trips, almost all corners of the world can be visited on a budget.
