Whenever we talk of music, a debate over recent music and the 90s music is certain to happen. Yeah, there are people who might love today’s music more but there might be no one who would hate the music era of the 90s and early 2000s.
Today’s article is a nostalgia for all those who have grown up listening to the indie music and remixes of the early 2000s. In fact, there were many bands at that time who gave a break to the careers of a lot of famous singers now.
Since I mentioned indie music, it is quite obvious that here I am going to mention a few Indian bands who made our childhood amazing.

The Aryans
As they are my personal favourite, I have mentioned them first. The soothing tunes with beautiful lyrics, Aryans gave us some mesmerising and catchy songs like Aankhon mein tera hi chehra which starred the Bollywood superstar Shahid Kapoor in his teenage look and Dekha hai teri aankhon ko.
If you are anyhow unaware of these songs, believe me, you have missed a lot. Aryans was a band of three extremely talented people who started the band with a goal to take indi- pop music to new heights. Their songs became major hits when they were released. They remained active for quite a long period of time but then they got inactive maybe due to some of their own reasons.
But their songs are still fresh and soothing.

Silk Route
If you have grown up listening to indie-pop songs, you must have not missed the Dooba Dooba Rahta Hoon by Silk Route. This song is still fresh and nostalgic for the people who heard it in their childhood.
The band consisted of four members including one of the very popular singers now Mohit Chauhan , who is quite famous for his vocals and bollywood songs like “matargashti, masakali, kun faya kun etc.”
In 1998, their first album Boondein was released and it was a major hit. In 2000, they released their second album Pehchaan that was unfortunately their last as well. The Band may have ended but they gave us some of the mesmerising tunes to vibe on and it also gave one of the finest singers to the Bollywood.
Bombay Vikings
Remember the catchy and goofy versions of the 70’s songs like Hawa mein udta jaaye or Chhodh do aanchal zamana kya kahega or Kya soorat hai and many more. You know who gave us these gems which had meaningful lyrics of the 70's with western pop music, of course the Bombay Vikings.
Neeraj Shridhar, one of the famous singers in Bollywood also came into limelight with this band only. Lucky are those who witnessed the era when these pop music were at their best.

Jal (The Band)
First thing I would like to mention about this band is that the very popular Pakistani singer Atif Aslam began his career through this band. Well, if you were already aware of this, great, and if you were not, you must go and check. Okay, this band may not be completely Indian but their albums were quite popular here in India.
There are many popular songs this band has given us like Aadat, Sajni and Woh Lamhe. And there is no chance you may have not heard the latter one. If you have been a music lover since the early 2000s, you must have heard many of their songs.

Euphoria
If I know Euphoria for a particular song then it is Kabhi aana tu meri gully from their 2003 album Gully sung by Palash Sen and starring Vidya Balan, the lead vocalist. I am sure you must have heard this song at least once in your life.
The band was started in 1988, and their fist song called Dhoom Pichuk Dhoom became the most popular song to hit the TV screens in the entire decade. The idea of the band and its name, credits for both goes to Palash Sen, who was a medical student then in Delhi.
So, here concludes the list of five indie-pop bands of the 90's and early 2000’s. But as it is said Talent is never limited , this list can never sum up all the bands and their songs. I may have not mentioned some bands which might be your favourite. But, to compensate, here I am adding a few more bands and popular singers these bands gave us which I could not include in the list but could not neglect as well.
- Colonial Cousins - A band which included the legendary singer Hariharan.
- S5 - This band gave us the “Badtameez dil” singer Benny Dayal.
- Viva - One of the unique bands in itself, as it was an all-girls band in the era of all the boys bands. Neha Bhasin was the part of this.
- Sanam - Even though they are not an early 2000’s band, still I am adding it here because, if we are talking of a band, we can’t just ignore them. Because of them only, the good old bollywood music became popular among the genZ. And they are good enough to be mentioned here.
So, after reading an entire article, you must be convinced enough that the 90’s era was one of the best at least in music. At least, they introduced Indians with what pop music is. During those times, not only bands but individual artists were also giving major hits in independent music. Whether it be Made in India, Piya basanti re, or ab mujhe raat din, every song is so special, that it would need a particular article on it.
But with time, these bands just disappeared, they stopped making songs. There may be different reasons but one specific reason is the audience. Indian people never understood the magic of pop music and I guess that’s what forced these bands to end.
