Introduction:

The Kashmir Files is an Indian film, written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri. It is a fictional movie presenting the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus in the era of 1990s. The exodus was considered genocide, a notion not very accurate. The film features Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi.

Movie Name – The Kashmir Files

Director’s Name – Vivek Agnihotri

Genre – Thriller, Drama, Mystery, Historical

Language – Hindi

Synopsis (Non-spoiler):

In the 1989-90 Islamic militants ban Kashmiri Hindus from entering or living in the valley using the slogans Raliv Galiv ya Chaliv (English translation: convert (to Islam) or leave or die) and Al-Safa Batte Dafa (English translation: with god's grace whole Kashmiri Pandit community will leave valley). The first half of the film follows the story of Pushkar Nath Pandit who is unable to save his son Karan and eventually moves to Nadimarg with his daughter-in-law and two grandsons, Shiva and Krishna

The film moves to the present-day scenario, and we see Krishna taking his grandfather’s ashes to Kashmir as per his last wish. Influenced by his professor, Radhika Menon, Krishna also blames the Government for the mass murder in which his mother and brother died. It is claimed that it was the Indian Army who turned the Nadimarg into a mass grave. Brahma unable to witness this lie hands him the newspaper articles and data collected by Pushkar at that time to make him aware of the truth. Krishna returns to Delhi, to his college ANU where he gives the speech and lets the college students know about the reality of the situation.

About the Director:

Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri is an Indian film director, screenwriter and author. He is a member of India's Central Board of Film Certification and a cultural representative of Indian Cinema at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. His film The Tashkent Files won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay – Dialogues. His films did not win critical acclaim and have not performed well at the box office as well. But The Kashmir Files has turned the game for him. The film became a blockbuster and won the hearts of millions of people across the country for bringing to light the facts about the situation in Kashmir.

Psychological Analysis:

The film was made tax free in the entire nation and was promoted by the Hindu nationalist Government Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi. The film prioritised justice and closure for the Pandit community. “The film is not about religion but terrorism,” says Vivek Agnihotri. The film must be taken that way. The problem prevailing is not being Hindu or Muslim but the unharmonized way of promoting religion. The movie evokes a feeling of patriotism among the people.

But some individuals also hold that the film was distorted in its facts and was presented with an alternative perspective to incite the audience. The film could have been embedded with more objective facts and views. The bloodshed has been shown with authenticity, and the valleys of Kashmir depict beauty even though the darkness around it and the performances of the actors are compelling.

Famous Dialogues:

“Azadi is a song of terrorism.”

“Kya Kashmiri Pandito ko wapas apne ghar jane ka mauka milega, is this the justice?”

“Log mar rahe hain sir, Kashmir Jal raha hai… Kashmir Jal raha hai…!

“Politics ka bas ek hi ant hai. Vinash… maut…maut ke darr se mai bhi, kayar ban jau…”

“Ye sataye huye log, guns hi uthayenge. Sir. kashmiri pandito ne toh, kabhi koi bandook nahi uthai. kyun ?”

“Jahan Shiv Saraswati Rishi Kashyap hue…Wo Kashmir hamara that…jahan Panchtantra likha gaya…woh Kashmir hamara tha…tu janta hi kya hai Kashmir ke bare mein”

“Kashmir ke masle ka ek hi hal… Jihad.”

“Padma Shri, Sarkar ne aapko khamosh rehne ke liye diya hai.”

The Bottom Line:

The movie is really enrapturing with the details and dialogues. The stellar performances by the star cast must be appreciated, especially by Anupam Kher. It would be advisable to read about Article 370 etc present in the constitution. These are frequently mentioned in the movie and the movie would be easily comprehendible if you have prior knowledge about it.
