Series Review: Crashing - ‘Humorous, Witty and Dark Comedy’

Source: Damienmolony

Anything written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge is bound to be uproarious and this series in no way falls short. Her comic timing and acting are brilliant and so is the acting of all the other actors in the series. It is worth binge-watching. It is not always every day that you get to watch shows that in an ironic way mixed with humour portray the reality of the world in some ways but this series, it is.

Synopsis - Spoiler Alert!

Crashing is a British comedy series written and created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge the humour and the acting will just make you keep on going and you won't be able to resist laughing. Six individuals; Lulu played by Phoebe, Anthony played by Damien Molony, Sam by Jonathan Bailey, Kate played by Louise Ford, Fred played by Amit Shah and Melody played by Julie Dray live in an abandoned, large, disused hospital as its property guardian. They all are in their 20s and 30s and share different relationship equations.

This series does not primarily focus on one character rather it keeps on showing how each of these characters is going about their lives but the relationship between Lulu, Anthony, and Kate I believe is the main one because it is rather a complicated one. Kate and Anthony are engaged but when Lulu, Anthony’s childhood friend crashes into their lives, things are not going to remain the same.

The personality of Kate and Lulu is in stark contrast with one another. While Kate is a perfectionist and a very successful person at her job; Lulu has no job or money, she does not stay in one place for long, is an alcoholic, and makes rash decisions whose outcomes are not always good or appreciated. This show is for an adult audience as it involves some sexual content and dark humour.

His feature film comedy - Apocalypse Clown - is due to enter production in early 2022, supported by Screen Ireland and produced by Fastnet Films.

Personal verdict

I had a lot of fun watching this show. It was an absolute delight like it is with everything Phoebe Waller-Bridge writes. The actors did a fabulous job at portraying the different characters and bringing forward the drama, humour, and romance. Anthony and Kate’s relationship is put to the test when Lulu arrives and the sexual tension between Lulu and Anthony from the start promises us a lot of fun drama ahead.

Then there is Jonathan Bailey who plays the role of Sam, a real estate agent who is obsessed with himself and considers himself the centre of everyone’s attention and also is quite an attention seeker himself. When he spends time with Fred who is gay, he slowly starts developing feelings for him but constantly denies it until jealousy hits when Fred meets a new guy and starts to entertain the possibility that he might not be as straight as he thought.

The constant bickering of the characters, and their confused actions, and emotions sum up to make this series a fun comedy full of shows worth watching.
