Tales of friendships and romantic comedies have been a tried and tested formula across periods to provide entertainment to the audiences. Most shows that come up with such narratives try to attach with themselves a certain niche subtype of these tales. The Bold Type released in 2017 was one such show that utilized this tried and tested formula, yet ended up making a mark for itself.

Synopsis - Non-Spoiler Alert

The show is centered around a fashion magazine- Scarlet and three women working there- Kat Edison, Sutton Brady, and Jane Sloan along with their Editor in Chief- Jacqueline Carlyle. The show deals with their struggles in the city and the corporate world. Across its five seasons, each character in the show undergoes a journey filled with achievements and also, trials and tribulations.

Not only does the main characters’ story strengthen as the show progresses, but the supporting cast’s narrative also progresses considerably. Towards the beginning of the show, Kat becomes cognizant of her sexuality and the rest of the seasons trace her journey of discovery. Her career graph’s parabola is also dwelled upon along with the issues that she raises her voice for throughout the series.

Jane, on the other hand, undergoes a process of liberation and self-discovery grounded strongly in her values. Sutton’s relationship with her boss sees its fair share of friction. Professionally, she grows up to become a stylist at the company.

Eventually, the characters mature considerably and find peace in their life.

About the Director

The writer of the show is Sarah Watson. The show has been directed by Victor Nelli Jr. Anna Mastro, Jamie Travis, Geary McLeod, April Winney, Kimberley McCullough, Jann Turner, etc. An episode of the series has also been directed by Melora Hardin who is also one of the main leads on the show.

Themes Involved

The show in its due course dwells on agendas like breast cancer, LGBTQ+ relationships, grief, sexual assault, and mental health issues. Sex positivity is very evident across the show. The show also emphasizes the inherent complexities in relationships and friendships. Themes on substance abuse addiction and Islamophobia are also dealt with.

The number of narratives running across the show adds to the reality aspect of the show, but at the same time creates some chaos. The fact that some issues are so quickly dealt with reflects a simplistic notion of life that may not always seem to be real. Yet, the show needs to be given due credit for involving such a diverse range of agendas in the plot.

The Bottom Line

The show highlights several important aspects and is rooted in a vivid and diverse storyline. Despite this, the show seems a little distant from reality and fabricated. The capitalistic undertones of the show’s setting are quite evident in the lifestyle and life choices of certain characters.

However, all in all, the show does not fail to fit a place in the audiences’ hearts. The inculcation of diverse narratives and issues may seem chaotic in places. But the intentions of the makers cannot be ignored. The victory of the show is ingrained in its very intentions. The casting of the characters is well done and Melora Hardin as Jacqueline Carlyle stands out; her role in the show is such a divergence from her role in The Office that it only highlights how remarkable an actor she is.
