Existence of Urdu and Hindi Poetry in Oldest Bollywood Songs

“Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai
Ki jaise tujhko banaya gaya hai mere liye
Tu abse pehle sitaaron mein bas rahi thi kahin
Tujhe zameen pe bulaya gaya hai mere liye”

Do these lines only feel like the lyrics of a song? No, they are like a piece of poetry- an art. The generation who is vibing to the raps of the present age would never understand the depth of the lyrics, Hindi movies used to possess.

These lines from the song from the Bollywood film “Kabhi Kabhie” are written by Sahir Ludhianvi, a prominent lyricist in the Bollywood industry who has given a number of beautiful pieces.

Making music has never been a secondary thing in India. The attention filmmakers used to give to the screenplay of the movie, same was given to the making of the songs. Writing lyrics used to be an art which not everyone could do. And that’s the reason why those songs are still embedded in the hearts of music lovers.

Lyricists Who Were Actually Poets

Writing lyrics and writing poems used to be the same thing. And that's the beauty of the lyrics of old Hindi songs. When you listen to them, you love the music but when you read them and understand the meaning, you love it even more.

Gulzar, Sahir Ludhianvi, and Javed Akhtar are the lyricist who has written most of the songs of Bollywood in the era when Bollywood was the best in terms of music. These people have not just written lyrics for Bollywood but many beautiful poems as well.

Gulzar- The Poet of Images

“Aadmi bulbula hai paani ka aur paani ki bahti satah par toot’ta bhi hai, doobta bhi hai, phir ubharta hai, phir se behta hai”

This is a line from one of Gulzar’s pieces. The condition of a man is shown so beautifully through these lines. The lines are so motivating in themselves and advise not to give up because just like an air bubble on the water, you may sink, you may break but you will reframe yourself.

Tere khayal mein doob ke aksar achhi lagey tanhaayi”

Just a line written by Gulzar is as poetic as anything can ever be in the entire world. A simple line describing how a lover can enjoy loneliness while being lost in the beloved's thoughts can not be written in a better way than what Gulzar has written.

Kaagazon ki kashtiyon ka koi kinara hota nahi”

The feel of this line is sad as it makes us deal with reality and tells us that there is no future with temporary things but still the way it is written makes us smile at the imagination of the poet.

When it comes to Bollywood, Gulzar has given us some of the most beautiful lyrics like in the songs “Dil to bachha hai ji”, “Bol na halke halke”, “Dilbaro”, “Tere bina” etc. His song “Jai Ho” from “Slumdog Millionaire” even made him win the Grammy award as well.

If you still don’t believe in the power of Gulzar’s lyrics, read this:

“Baal agar bikhrey hai, Seedhi maag nahin nikli
Baandhein nahi angiyaan feetey, Toh bhi koi baat nahin
Jaisi ho, Waisi hi..aajaao,
Singaar ko rehne do”
These lines from one of the songs by Gulzar very beautifully express the desire of a lover to see his beloved without caring about her appearance. He doesn’t care whether her hair is done or not, she is nicely dressed or not, what he cares about is her existence and his desire to meet her.

No one can deny the fact that whatever Gulzar writes becomes poetry in itself.

Sahir Ludhianvi- Who Gives Life to the Words

If we are talking about Sahir and Bollywood, I will definitely begin with the lyrics of one of the very popular songs from the movie “Kabhi Kabhie” because I don’t think I have ever heard anything more meaningful than it in the entire Bollywood.

Mai Pal Do Pal Kaa Shaayar Hun
Pal Do Pal Meri Kahaani Hai
Pal Do Pal Meri Hasti Hai
Pal Do Pal Meri Javaani Hai”

These lines feel very realistic, thanks to the man who used a few words from a very common language and added his magic to it.

Okay, if you are a music lover and love them for their lyrics, I am gonna mention a few lyrics below, and you will be surprised to know that all your favourite songs are written by Sahir Ludhianvi.

“Jaane Woh Kaise Log The Jinke Pyar Ko Pyar Mila
Humne To Jab Kaliyaan Maangi Kaaton Ka Haar Mila”

“Naa munh chhupake jiyo,Aur naa sar jhuka ke jiyo
Gamon kaa daur bhi aaye, Toh muskura ke jiyo”

Abhi na jao chhod kar ke dil abhi bhara nahi”

I believe you are now convinced that the old Hindi songs were better than now because the songs were more meaningful and poetic.

Bollywood Lyrics Inspired From Poems

“Raanjha raanjha kardi ve main, aape raanjha hoi
Raanjha raanjha saddo ni mainu heer na aankho koi”

The lyrics of one of the songs in the movie “Raavan” has these initial lines by Bulleh Shah who was a popular Sufi Poet.

Tu kisi rel si guzarti hai,
Main kisi pul sa thartharata hu”

This is a song from the movie “Masaan”. The entire song is written by Varun Grover but these two lines are taken from the Ghazal of Dushyant Kumar.

This practice of involving poetry in music makes the Bollywood industry more precious for people like me who love music as well as poetry.
