Mehar Sindhu Batra - Each Individual Has a Personality and Talents That Are Wonderfully Unique to Them (Career Coach From India)

Mehar

My mentorship sessions with students and working professionals starts by understanding the mentees’ background, interests, and professional goals. After talking to them and analysing holistically, I leverage my experience and knowledge to help them understand their true passions, assess their career options and thus create a tailor-made long-term plan for their future.

1. Tell us more about your journey and background.

Born & raised in New Delhi, India, like most 90s kids - I followed the traditional path of pursuing a professional degree. After great trials and triumphs, I qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2015. But soon after, I decided to push myself down the unconventional path of pursuing an international MBA degree from Imperial College, London. I specialised in strategy and brand management.

I currently have 8+ years of work experience across start-ups and large corporations in management consulting, customer insights, and growth strategy in India and the UK. My love for social media led me to launch my side-hustle, MSB Vision, in 2019. Over the last three years, I have built a community of 400,000+ across YouTube and Instagram.

I am now an entrepreneur living in London mentoring professionals through workshops, university talks, interviews, newsletters, and courses on topics such as career strategy, interview/CV tips, brand building, and effective communication. I have mentored 10,000+ students and given talks at 30+ universities. I now wake up in the morning excited to help young professionals accelerate their careers.

2. How can a career coach help someone make a more informed decision?

As young professionals navigate their career paths they lack either of the three: lack of knowledge, lack of guidance, or lack of motivation. This is also because the number of courses, degrees, and career opportunities that are available are now countless. I, as a career coach, help them to recognise their career vision, streamline their interests and create their own path consisting of things they are truly passionate about and thus, help eliminate that chaos and confusion in their mind.

3. How do you go about assessing someone and making recommendations?

Each individual has a personality and talents that are wonderfully unique to them. My mentorship sessions with students and working professionals starts by understanding the mentees’ background, interests, and professional goals.

After talking to them and analysing holistically, I leverage my experience and knowledge to help them understand their true passions, assess their career options and thus create a tailor-made long-term plan for their future.

4. What according to you are the key differences between studying in India vs abroad?

Studying in India is affordable and builds a strong academic foundation for students. Courses in India help you to connect theory to events happening in the country. Pursuing education from top colleges in India is definitely worth it.

Studying abroad helps you build a global perspective. Degrees from great universities abroad give you exposure to a more practical methodology of academia and at the same time, focus on developing communication, leadership, and team-building skills with people from all over the world. However, deciding to study abroad is a very personal decision as it involves a lot of investment in terms of time, money, and effort.

5. How can one decide if they need to go and see a career coach?

If someone is unsure of what degree to pursue, what field to work in, what courses to take up, how to switch fields, how to progress in their chosen field, how to build a professional brand, how to become more professionally confident - they should definitely see a career coach! It will help eliminate the uncertainty and confusion in their mind and create a clarity about career goals.

6. Which is your favourite book and why?

There are too many books I love but the one that comes to my mind immediately is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It truly led to my spiritual awakening and inspired me to follow my heart and dreams. I keep re-reading it at different points in my life.

7. What are the best qualities that a career coach needs to be successful?

It is the duty of a career coach to help young professionals make the right decisions to reach their own true potential. It is very important to be empathetic, non-judgemental, positive as well as abreast with the latest innovations and changes happening in the job industry.

8. What kind of strategies and mindset is required for this role?

Majority of students and professionals I speak to, are unaware of their own capabilities and confused about their future goals. Being supportive, goal-oriented and a good listener, I work with them to curate a strategy and take the necessary steps to reach their professional goals.

Bio

I was born and raised in New Delhi, India. I qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2015, and afterwards, I moved to London to pursue an MBA degree from Imperial College. Over the last 8 years, I have worked at large corporations, such as KPMG and EY, medium-sized organisations as well as start-ups across India and the UK. I live in London with my husband Shashank, and I work for a British management consulting firm.

I guide and mentor young students who are struggling to make key decisions for their careers. As a career coach, I help my students develop a vision for their future and assess the options available to them to get there. I ask them questions that they don't usually ask themselves and assist them in thinking through the answers on what they truly want from their professional lives.
