“They say, marriages are made in heaven, that they are a sacred union of two souls. But on the ground, the reality is slightly different.” From these lines, in his monologue, the cinematographer of the wedding plan company, Kabir beautifully summarizes the essence of the entire show. In its 9 episodes, the show delves deep into the underlying realities of marriage.

Synopsis - Non-Spoiler Alert

Made in Heaven is a tale of the experiences of two friends Karan and Tara who run a wedding planning company by the name Made in Heaven. As they plan several weddings, the show extracts what is happening behind the scenes of such magnanimous events.

In its due course the two deal with a new wedding in every episode. There is a wedding of an NRI with a Ludhiana-based girl after she wins a contest, a wedding in the household of a political party, the wedding of an IAS officer, etc. There's a beautiful subtle analogy of what happens at the weddings with what is happening in Tara’s life. Karan, who is a closeted gay goes through an entire process of self-realization himself.

About the Director

The 9 episodes have been directed by Zoya Akhtar, Alankrita Shrivastava, Nitya Mehra, and Prashant Nair. Nair is best known for his feature film Umrika. He has also worked on projects like Tryst with Destiny. Nitya Mehra is best known for having worked on the oscar winning-Life of Pi, she has also directed Baar Baar Dekho.

Shrivastava has been the name behind renowned projects like Lipstick Under My Burkha, Bombay Begums, etc. Zoya Akhtar has also carved a niche for herself in the industry by directing movies like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Gully Boy, etc.

Themes Involved

The show in its due course deals with themes like dowry, class differences, impotency, orthodoxy, drug addiction, etc. In the face of several complexities while planning the weddings, Tara and Karan attempt to face it all and give the bride and the groom a smooth ride.

The gradual unleashing of Tara’s life comes as a surprise and an engaging element in the plot. Her character unfolds episode by episode and explains many times how she reacts.

Set majorly in the high-class locales of Delhi, the show primarily dwells on the narratives of the elite but attempts to highlight the intricacy of Delhi in total is worth appreciation. The character of Jazz is noteworthy navigation into the not-so-bright locales of Delhi, and into the lives of the ordinary.

The show is an honest attempt to bring out the inherent patriarchy that dominates society. All in all, the concerted attempts of the makers are well evident.

Famous Dialogues

"What's really interesting is that it took a girl from Dwarka to show a princess from Dubai how to crack open her man's heart. What's not so interesting is that apparently, all it takes is cooking and praying.”  -Kabir

"Welcome to New Delhi. Insider or Outsider…you will find your corner. Because the truth is, you scratch any surface and it all comes down to the same thing. Hope. Hope for better, hope for holier, hope for happier. Young, old, rich, poor, modern, traditional in New Delhi we all wake up wondering if what heaven planned for us will happen today.” -Kabir

"Do you realize on how many levels this is wrong? You're a woman, for god’s sake!" -Karan

“Which is why I will not judge her.” -Tara

"Fear rules the men and women of this city. The fear of recognizing yourself in another. The fear of losing what you have. Of never getting another chance. Of being on the inside and realizing you’re actually an outsider. Fear can give you courage. And fear can also perpetuate your biases and superstitions.” -Kabir

The Bottom Line

Made In Heaven is a tale of friendships, marriages, betrayal, and triumph. The primary strength of the show is its immensely strong script coupled with the powerful performances of all the characters. The strong cast of the show is what is the cherry on top. The characters feel so real that you might look for their nuances in people around you.

The themes that the show covers leave no scope for criticizing it for the lack of substance in the plot. The show takes a stance on the ingrained patriarchy in society and hits the hammer on the head of the right nail.
