The news broke out that the journey of the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is coming to an end for former cricketer Sourav Ganguly who became the president back in 2019 and he is to be replaced by Robert Binny officially on October 18, 2022.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri is delighted to see Robert Benny being the candidate selected for the position of president of the board.

Who is Roger Binny?

Roger Binny is a former Indian cricketer who was part of the 1983 World cup winning squad and clinched the world trophy for the time in the history of Indian cricket.

Binny, aged 67, has immense experience in cricket administration. He has served in different positions at the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) over the years and has been its president since 2019. Before that, Binny also was part of the KSCA administrations led by Patel and Anil Kumble from 2010-12. However, the age-cap rule, which has led to the end of Patel’s run, will also restrict 1983 World Cup winner Binny’s tenure to one term of three years.

Binny was the first Anglo-Indian of Scottish origin to play cricket for his motherland, India. His son, Stuart Binny also followed in his father’s footsteps, having played state cricket for the Karnataka cricket team, and international cricket for the Indian national cricket team.

Binny’s Cricket Career Highlights

Roger Binny is a cricketing all-rounder who is best known for his fantastic bowling performance in the 1983 Cricket World Cup where he was the highest wicket-taker since he took 18 wickets and in the 1985 World Series Cricket Championship in Australia where he almost repeated this feat by taking 17 wickets.

His international career kicked off in his home ground, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore in the first Test of the 1979 home series against Pakistan. Against bowlers of the calibre of Imran Khan and Sarfraz Nawaz, he performed amazingly well in his debut match by scoring 46 runs. He was an advanced swing bowler and one of the better fielders in the Indian team of that time.

His Test career was not stellar, but he and fellow Pace bowler Karsan Ghavri helped get the shine off the new ball before India's famous bowlers could take over. Binny and Ghavri alongside wicket-keeper Syed Kirmani were also credited with saving many test matches for India.

When the top batting order collapsed, Binny was counted on to hold the batting down to avoid innings defeats or drag the match to a draw. However, he came into his own in the World Cup. The wickets suited his medium-pace, and in tandem with Madan Lal, and led by the great Kapil Dev, he helped India win their first World Cup title.

Binny is currently the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). He appeared as the in-house cricket expert for the national news channel – NewsX, during the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. On 27 September 2012, Binny was appointed as one of the five members of the selection panel of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. As we have already discussed in the beginning, he is set to become president of BCCI on 18 October 2022.

History of BCCI

The Board of Control for Cricket in India also popularly known as simply BCCI is the official governing body for cricket in India. Its headquarters are situated at the Cricket Centre, Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The BCCI is the richest governing body of cricket in the world and is part of the Big Three of international cricket, along with Cricket Australia and the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The BCCI is an autonomous, private organization and does not fall under the jurisdiction of the National Sports Federation of India. The government of India has minimal control over its functioning. BCCI manages three cricket groups that represent India in international cricket which include- the men's national cricket team, the women's national cricket team, and the national under-19 cricket team.

Conclusion

Roger Binny is a great sportsman and cricketer who is set to become the next president of BCCI. His tenure as the president might bring some new changes in the functioning and development of the cricket team which will further help them break more records in the future.
