Organisational Behaviour: Origin and Importance of OB

The change in dynamics of the organisations is a concern for all the stakeholders and the participating employee. The introduction to the study of organisational behaviour is necessary, as it is linked with the productivity of fellow workers. This upskills all the participating members of the regulation and works culture followed in the organisation.

The practice is to identify the factors that are narrowing down the efficiency in the workplace.

Organisational Behaviour

The study of the factors influencing the behaviour of humans hints at the threat to the efficiency of the employees. It is a multidisciplinary approach that involves various elements in it. This is set up to frame regulations to automate a better culture in an organisation.

Examples of Organisation behaviour include employee rapport with fellow workers and the coordination between the manager and team people.

The study is not only limited to only one or a particular organisation but is concerned with the community of the organisations.

Organisation behaviour can be defined as ‘the study of human behaviour within the enclosed area of an organisation, which is relatively associated with the structure, work culture and technology’.

The organisation is subdivided into three levels comprising of low level, middle level and high level. The low level includes entry-level people, the middle level includes management authorities and the high level includes authoritative people (leaders).

Origin Of Organisational Behaviour

The primary objective of OB is to study the balance between the organisation's culture, workers and productivity. Different techniques and strategies are adopted to improve productivity by organising sessions, creating a better environment, increasing wages and improving the organisation structure.

It was in the year 1776, the foundation for organisational behaviour was laid. Post-century, Taylor proposed the concept of goal setting by introducing the reward system to motivate employees. This is referred to as the peak point from where the study was carried on.

Followed by many studies and research were conducted to get clarity on organisational behaviour.

Other factors such as historical development were carried back in time which contributed to the origin of OB.

  1. Industrial Revolution

  2. Scientific Management

  3. Human Relations Movement

Positive Organisational Behaviour

The implementation of positive approaches focuses on the strength, resources and possessed capabilities of individuals to enhance the organisation's performance and productivity level.

According to Luthans, Positive organizational behaviour (POB) has been defined as the study and application of positively oriented human resource strengths and psychological capacities that can be measured, developed, and effectively managed for performance improvement in today's workplace.

Leaders insist upon building the strength of the participating members of the organisation, rather than the weakness.

Positive Organisational Behaviour focuses on hope, optimism and self-efficacy. It is believed that the satisfied worker is more productive. Hence Positive Psychology is practised. The POB emerged from the Positive Psychology Movement.

Building Positive Organisational Behaviour

  1. Celebrating festivals

  2. Monthly team outings

  3. Surprise gifts

  4. Rewards for task completion

  5. Conducting training sessions

  6. Open mic

  7. Appreciation

  8. Feedback

  9. Works on their strength

  10. Conduct meetings to initiate the discussion of what methodologies can be adapted to expect the work-life balance.

Importance of OB

Every individual manifests specific behaviour when they are around people from different backgrounds, or in organisation settings, the study to understand the influence of such behaviour becomes of prime importance because the behaviour can either directly or indirectly affect the attitudes of others around.

The motive of the organisational behaviour is to improve the attitude of individuals present in the organisation to build a better future, i.e., working on the attitudes, and leadership styles, boosting reward factors and innovation. Also, it paves a direction for the organisation of what could be redesigned.

  1. OB eventually leads to skill improvement. It also proves to be efficient where the participants make use of the learnt knowledge to increase their productivity.

  2. Helps to understand the grounds for motivation.

  3. Can contribute to a better workspace.

Bottom Line

Organisational Behaviour contributes a great deal to the success of the organisation. Often the relevance is misunderstood. It covers certain people management skills.  The understanding of the OB can promote productivity by introducing various factors like appreciation, incentives and reward systems.
