Pashupatinath Temple is the oldest Hindu Temple in Kathmandu of the world. Pashupati is mainly worshipped in Nepal and India. 

According to the Hindu religion, Pashupatinath is considered the protector of the universe and the pattern deity of the Nepal people.

UNESCO’s World

The Pashupatinath temple complex is part of UNESCO’s World Heritage site. Pashupatinath Temple’s existence is recorded as early as 400 CE. The Complex included 518 temples buildings and structures.

Meaning Of The Pashupatinath 

Pashupatinath or Pashupati means “Lord of all Creatures”. Another name for Pashupati temples is Devanagari Pashupati and Sanskrit Pashupati.

It is not known for certain when Pashupatinath Temple was built, but according to Nepal Mahatmaya and himvatkhanda. 

Temple is revered as one of the most important and secret holy pilgrimage sites for Hindu devotees all around the world. Pashupatinath is considered the protector of the universe. 

The History Behind The Temple

The story goes that once when Lord Shiva and Parvati come to the Kathmandu valley, they rested by the bank of the Bagmati. They landed in Nepal’s forest regions and were fascinated by the glory of the land. 

The Gods later caught up with him and grabbed him by one of his horns, forcing him to resume his divine form. So the broken horn was worshipped as a king, but over time it was buried and lost. 

Features Of Temple

Include carved wooden rafters, and cubic sculptures, with two-level roofs covered with copper and gold sheet. 

Pashupati seal found at Mohangodaro, the horned male is surrounded by animals an elephant and tiger on one side, a buffalo and a rhinoceros on the other.
