Analyzing the Story and Roles of Characters in the Movie "Shootout at Lokhandwala"

Introduction

The movie ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’ tries to depict the firing that took place at the Lokhandwala complex in Mumbai. The film also shows the rise of Maya Dolas and his gang, A.C.P. Aftab Ahmed Khan, and how the A.T.S(Anti-Terroriam Squad) was founded. The movie takes us back and forth several times showing us the past and connecting it to the present.

Analyzing the Storyline Along the Main Characters

The film begins with blood and ends with blood & victory, thus telling the viewers that this movie is no less than a thrilling horror action. The director of the film Apporva Lakhia seems to have provided some sort of justice by forwarding the movie in a narration mode. Mahindra Dolas urf Maya Bhai(role played by Vivek Oberoi) whose name created fear in the whole of Mumbai had a stone heart and who had escaped from prison by killing two policemen was another center of attention as the film depicts his rise and how the knife reached his hands during childhood. He later goes on to form his gang by including Mumbai’s best underworld shooter of that time ‘Dileep Buva’(role played by Tushar Kapoor) who had no ‘superego’ but only listened to his ‘id’ and this gang was one among ‘Dawood’s best men of India’.

The gang also consisted of Fatim urf Fattoo Bhai(role played by Rohit Roy) was not brave enough in shooting and learned this skill by being a part of this gang. The movie depicts the surprise entry and early death of Abhishek Bachchan(who played the role of inspector Abhishek Mathri) who died very early in the film thus the film does not provide justice to the capabilities of Abhishek Bachchan. But on the other hand ‘Abhishek Bachchan’ does his level best to live up to the role of ‘Abhishek Mathri’.

The movie storyline is very beautifully written by the writers that depict at first the situation in which inspector ‘Abhishek Mathri’ was murdered followed by a brilliant raid and firing by A.C.P AA Khan and his team. Thus the rise of the A.T.S. began from these very routes. The film tries to cover all the important aspects related to the event. The film spends its last 30 minutes depicting the situation at Lokhandwala, the encounter by the police, and the defeat & killing of the seven gangsters.

Looking at how ‘Sanjay Dutt’ has played the role, his get up, entry at each corner of the film, acting and smart work in the film, I think he has done justice to the role and has been able to confidently depict who AA Khan was as an inspector.

Suniel Shetty is depicted as a fit cop and is counted as one of the best cops chosen for ATS. I feel that he was the best actor chosen for this part and he has done clear justice to his role in depicting the character of inspector ‘Kaviraj Patil’.

Arbaaz Khan is playing the role of inspector ‘Javed Sheikh’ who not only is an excellent cop but also one of the best shooters on the team. He is depicted as a family man who commits himself to the service of his nation. Arbaaz does a very good job in this film.

Vivek Oberoi is the second key player after Sanjay Dutt in the movie. Vivek has beautifully played roles such as those of a hero, a comedian actor, and a villain. One of the best villain roles is in the movie ‘Shootout At Lokhandwala’.

Tushar Kapoor has been exceptional in the movie. Playing the role of ‘Dileep Buva’ he has clearly shown how dangerous Dileep Buva was.

I guess no one else could have done the role of ‘Fatim’ better than ‘Rohit Roy’. The acting, the madness, the expressions, and the dialogues were exceptionally displayed by Rohit Roy.

Ravi Gossain played the role of Aslam Kasai. He had nothing much to do in the film except one murder. He was shot early in his role.

Aditya Lakhia is depicted as playing the role of ‘doubling’. He has done his role quite well and I have nothing to add.

Shabir Ahluwalia is playing the role of ‘RC’. He is portrayed as being afraid of a ghost family. He too is fit for that role.

Amrita Singh is the mother of ‘Maya Dolas’ who seems to have been supporting her son and his entire gang in their work, unlike ordinary mothers. She being an experienced actor seems to have done justice to her role.

Both Amitabh & Abhishek Bachchan are not shown doing much in the movies, but their presence is the key essence. Diya Mirza could be the best in this role as her acting is perfect. Neha Dhupia doesn’t have much to do in this film but has a big impact on the character role of Sanjay. ‘Aarti Chabia’ smartly plays her role as ‘Bhuva’s girlfriend’.

The surprise entry of ‘Rakhi Sawant’ stunned me. Akhilendra Mishra being in the positive get-up as inspector ‘Tripathi’, has a negative role to play and Shrivallabh Vyas is depicted as being submissive as he helps the gang with money, thus playing the role of ‘Wadhwani’.

The Movie Can Get No Better, but a Few Suggestions I Would Give:-

1. I felt Arbaaz Khan could have played the role of ‘Abhishek Mathri’ and Abhishek Bachchan could have played the role of ‘Javed Sheikh’.

2. The movie could have focussed more on past events such as how the gangsters got into that apartment and the prior events that led to the shooting. The film gives brief information on this, but I felt that a little more could have been added.

3. The movie has three songs in between. The second song could have been eliminated and used that time to tell a little more about the story.
