The Tollywood or Bengali film industry is one of the most important film industries in India. It is known for producing many films for the Indian cinematic world that is acclaimed by critics on the world stage. Although the Bengali film industry has never been able to make the market at the box office like Bollywood or the South Indian film industry it has had a huge impact on Indian cinema.
Over the years several filmmakers from Tollywood have subsequently influenced people across the world with their art of direction at different times. Filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Hrithik Ghatak, and Mrinal Sen gifted so many films which are truly outstanding and impeccable to date. The movies have been loved and appreciated by the people and praised by critics around the globe many times. Their works and cinematic style are for inspiration for many directors in those contemporary times and at present as well.
Here I am going to tell you about five new Bengali directors who might help to regain the reputation and popularity of Bengali films at the national and international level as well with your wonderful works.
Srijit Mukherji

Srijit Mukherji is the most prominent director in the Bengali film industry at present. His films are just so eye-soothing and detailed which makes him different from others. He won the National Film Awards several times for his amazing works. He debuted with a film called ‘Autograph’, probably one of his best works ever in 2010. And after he never looked back. With several art and commercial films, he has been trying his luck on OTT platforms and web series also. ‘Rajkahini’, ‘Baishe Shrabon’, Jaatishawar, ‘Chotuskone’, ‘Gumanaami’, ‘Ek Je Chilo Raja’, ‘Dwitiyo Purush’, etc. are some of his works that got critical and commercial success as well. Recently in 2022, he also made two films in the Hindi language one is ‘Shabaash Mithu’, and another is ‘Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga’ and introduced himself to the Bollywood industry with these challenging films.
Kaushik Ganguly

Kaushik Ganguly is another efficient director from the Bengali film industry who made Tollywood proud with his works in recent years. Sex Education is his first directed movie which was released in 2004. Since his debut, he has made approximately 15 films which proves his efficiency in directing movies. Sex Education served as Kaushik's first directing effort (2004). Since making his debut, he has gone on to direct more than 15 movies and has garnered numerous accolades in the process. His best-known movies include Chotoder Chobi, Laptop, which received the National Award for Best Background Music in 2011, Shabdo which won the National Award for Best Bengali Film, and the National Award for Best Background Music in 2012. Chaya O Chobi, Nagarkirtan, Vinci da, etc. also got huge success in the theatres in West Bengal and were loved by the audience.
Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy

Shiboprasad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy are the two filmmakers who have been collaborating since 2011. This duo has been making such exceptional and educative films that portray societal issues and norms that we face every day in real life. They are also screenplay writers and actors as well.
With a unique directing style and socially relevant movies, they can make a different place in the minds of people in Bengal as well as in India. Haami, Bela She, Bela Shuru, Praktan, Gotro, Kontho, Lokkhi Chele, etc. are some notable films that win the hearts of people every time they watch them.
Mainak Bhaumik

Mainak Bhaumik is a director and film editor from Bengal who is known for his movies like Generation Aami, Ekannoborti, Bedroom, Bibaho Diaries, Goyenda Junior, Maach Misti & More, etc. He mostly makes films about the lives and struggles faced by the new generation of young Indians in society.
One of the top feature directors in the Indian Bengali filmmaking business today is Mainak Bhaumik, a documentary filmmaker with numerous international awards. He won several awards including the Best Short Film award for "His Life - Her Story" at the Florida Film Festival in 1998, the Art Award in 2005 at the Society for Visual Anthropology, the American Anthropological Association for his documentary film ‘Gone to Pat’ and the Viewers' Choice Award (2018) at the Hyderabad Bengali Film Festival for ‘Bibaho Diaries’.
