One such famous place is Prem Sarovar.

Prem Sarovar

Prem Sarovar, literally defined as love (for ‘Prem’) and lake (for ‘Sarovar'), is said to be the epitome of the selfless love of Shri Radha Ji and Shri Krishna Ji. Some people believe this to be the spot where Shri Radha Ji and Shri Krishna Ji used to meet.

People say, 'if you don't feel the love here, you won't feel it anywhere else in the world'.

Prem Sarovar is located one kilometer from Barsana, a village where Shri Radha Ji used to reside. Prem Sarovar is also said to be ‘tears of love’ that depict the inconsolable sadness one feels when separated from his/her love.

History of Prem Sarovar

The history of Prem Sarovar is multi-fold, as many people tend to believe different versions of the story, while the story consistently revolves around Shri Radha Ji and Shri Krishna Ji, and their pure love and devotion towards each other.

Among all the tales that echo in the lanes of Vrindavan, two of them stand out to be the most popular ones associated with Prem Sarovar.

Prem Sarovar – Where They Met

The prem Katha of Shri Radha Ji and Shri Krishna Ji has many verses, but according to some, it all started at the Prem Sarovar.

It is said that Shri Radha Ji and Shri Krishna Ji met at Prem Sarovar for the very first time in Dwapar Yuga. Shri Krishna Ji arrived at the spot with his male friends, and similarly, Shri Radha Ji arrived with her female friends.

Shri Radha Ji started playing Hide & Seek with her friends, where she had to search for her friends as a part of the game. In the course of events, Shri Radha Ji and Shri Krishna Ji came face to face.

On seeing the extraordinary beauty of Shri Radha Ji, Shri Krishna supposedly lost consciousness and fell to the ground. His friends, after seeing this, came running towards him and tried to wake him up or pick him up. But it didn't help, as Shri Krishna Ji was spellbound by Shri Radha Ji’s beauty.

While Shri Radha Ji’s friends told her to get going as it was getting late, Shri Krishna Ji’s friends tried to wake him up consistently. And when Shri Radha Ji left, Shri Krishna Ji gained his consciousness back.

But on the way back, Shri Radha Ji’s friend noticed that she was sad. On asking the reason for this, she said that she was worried about the beautiful Neel Mani (referring to Shri Krishna Ji), and was wondering whether he regained consciousness or not.

Her friend promised that she will bring Shri Krishna Ji to meet her, to gain the assurance that he is fine. Her friend asked Yashoda Maa (Shri Krishna Ji's Mother) for permission to take Shri Krishna Ji with her, and she allowed one condition. The condition was that Shri Krishna Ji can go only dressed as a female friend of theirs.

On accepting this condition, Shri Krishna Ji was taken to meet Shri Radha Ji. It is said that they met at the Prem Sarovar then, and since many leelas happened at Prem Sarovar regularly

Prem Sarovar – Tears Of Love

Another story associated with Prem Sarovar depicts love and separation and dates back thousands of years ago.

One day, when Shri Radha Ji visited the spot with her female friends, she was sitting with Shri Krishna Ji when a honeybee almost stung her face.

It is said that the honeybee mistook Shri Radha Ji’s face to be a flower and that is why she kept buzzing around her for quite some time. As the honeybee didn’t stop hovering, Shri Radha Ji covered her face with her palms. Seeing this, Shri Krishna Ji asked one of his male friends to keep the honeybee aside.

His friend managed to shoo away the honeybee and referred to the honeybee as Madhusudan, which means honeybee, and the same term was used to refer to Shri Krishna Ji.

Shri Krishna Ji’s friend declared that Madhusudan has gone away. Shri Radha Ji mistook this statement and thought that Shri Krishna Ji has gone away. She didn't even realize that she was sitting with Shri Krishna Ji then, and she started crying inconsolably.

As she couldn't bear the pain of separation, her tears didn't stop, and seeing this extent of love and devotion, Shri Krishna Ji also started crying. After a while, both of them fainted. Seeing such a depiction of boundless love, Shri Radha Ji’s female friends also fainted.

After a while, Shri Radha Ji’s female parrot started chanting Shri Radha Ji’s name repeatedly and her male parrot started chanting Shri Krishna Ji’s name repeatedly.

Listening to these chants, both of them regained consciousness and Shri Radha Ji realized she was sitting with Shri Krishna Ji this whole time. Their tears and sweat formed the Prem Sarovar, which is visited by crores of devotees to this date.

The lanes of Vrindavan still hold the echo of their stories and notions, making this town the perfect place for devotees who want to experience the boundless love of Shri Radha Ji and Shri Krishna Ji.
