Nobel Prize is one of the most prominent awards being given in five separate categories every year to people who have done some phenomenal work in that field.
The five categories in which Nobel Prize is given are Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Peace. Since 1901, every year, many people have been awarded in all these categories.
Who Started the Concept of the Nobel Prize?
Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist, best known for developing dynamite, passed away in 1896. He specified in his last will before he passed away in 1895, that all of his property and wealth would be used to establish the prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, economics, and peace, which came to be known as the Nobel Prizes.

The value of Nobel Prize is worth around 10 Million Swedish Kronor or roughly around 10 crores Indian rupees.
Indian Nobel Laureates
In India, the first Nobel prize was won by Rabindranath Tagore in 1913. After him, many Indians have taken their legacy ahead by winning the Nobel prize several times in various categories. Here is the list of the Nobel Laureates from India -
1. Rabindranath Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore is well known for his works in literature. In fact, the national anthem of India is also written by him. In 1913, When India was still under British colonial rule, he made the nation proud by bringing the Nobel prize in Literature to the country.
He was the first non-Westerner to be honoured with the Nobel prize in Literature. Gitanjali, a book compiled from his collection of poems made him win the prize.
2. CV Raman
CV Raman was the first person who made India known in the field of science. For his exceptional work on the behaviour of light or scattering of light, now known as the “Raman Effect”, which explains the reason for the blue colour of the sky, he won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930.
In fact, to celebrate his victory and contributions, his birthday is celebrated as National Science Day every year on 28th February. In entire Asia, he was the first person to win this prize in physics.
3. Har Gobind Khorana
HC Korana is one of the foremost scientists who worked in the field of biochemistry. He was born in India but later settled in the United States and he worked there in genetic research and became the first person to show how the order of nucleotides in nucleic acids carries the genetic code. For this, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1968.
4. Mother Teresa
Very well known for her kindness and compassion, Mother Teresa who came to India and served a lot of people selflessly, became one of the prominent Nobel Laureates of India. She was awarded the Nobel Prize for peace in 1979 for her humanitarian efforts.
5. Amartya Sen
Amartya Sen was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1998 in Economics for his eminent contributions to Welfare Economics and his extraordinary work for the causes and prevention of famines. He has written books that contain a vigorous intellectual depth. Amartya Sen is the fourth Indian to be awarded Nobel Prize in India.
6. Kailash Satyarthi
Kailash Satyarthi is an Indian social reformer who worked against child labour in India and supported the universal right to education. He was the co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize along with Malala Yousafzai in 2014. He is the founder of several social activist institutions like Bachpan Bachao Andolan, Global Campaign for Education, Global March Against Child Labour and Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation.
These were some of the people who won the Nobel Prize in India. The list contains a few more names as well like Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (Chemistry, 2009) and Abhijit Banerjee (Economics, 2019) etc.
What we need to learn is that it doesn’t matter what field you are working in, you can do miracles if you work dedicatedly.
