My View
This novel is what I might call a ‘gray work of art’. While reading Dickens, one can get the imagery of a time when England harbored a gray scenery - a time of labor, a time of the advent of the industrial revolution, a time when romance persisted but with it, came harsh realities of life, which were shrouded by the growing aristocratic society previously.
I personally adore Dickens for the way he does not hesitate in revealing the bitter atrocities of all sections of society at the time. This helps the reader to imagine the time in a better way and understand the 19th century from a clearer angle.
Initially, I read Great Expectations’ abridged version when I was a kid, but now that I can bear huge books reflecting multiple perceptions, I found the book one fine day and read the actual version. I would be lying if I say I was not star-struck by Dickens’ story-telling.
Even if you are not an ardent fan of reading, I recommend this book to you. Read it. If not the actual one, read the abridged version. If not the abridged version, read the summary. The tale is worth it.
