28\4\2023 was the first day to start “daylight saving time” or “summertime” in Egypt after 7 years of non-using it. Which made me and many other people so confused about timing. So, if this concerns you, let us know more about it.
What Is Daylight Saving Time?
DST, or daylight-saving time, is the time of year when
clocks are advanced by one hour. This results in extra daylight hours in the
evenings during the warmest months of the year.
At the start of DST 00:00:00 clocks were turned
forward 1 hour to the next day's 01:00:00 local daylight time instead. This is
called “springing forward”.
At the end of DST 00:00:00 clocks are turned
backward 1 hour to the same day 23:00:00 local standard time instead. This is
called “fall back”.
Why Daylight Saving Time Is Being Used?
The first goal was to conserve an hour's worth of fuel (oil or gas) per day for lighting lamps and heating households with coal. However, it is currently being used to conserve electricity and enjoy an extra hour of sunlight for a full six months. It is also good for the economy and promotes an active lifestyle.
Disadvantages of daylight saving time
Affects Health
Even a small shift in sleep schedules can have a severe impact on health because it interferes with a person's circadian rhythms.
Drops Productivity
As a result of the human circadian clock failing to adjust to DST, "the majority of the population has drastically decreased productivity, decreased quality of life, increased susceptibility to illness, and is just plain tired," according to a study.
Is Daylight Saving Time Welcomed Among People?
People do not welcome it. Simply because most people
see it as unnecessary.
According to a poll on Microsoft Bing internet browser
about “How do you feel about daylight saving time?”
22% choose “I love it, it gives me more daylight hours
to enjoy”
21% choose “I hate it, it messes up my sleep and
schedule”
14% choose “I don’t mind it, it doesn’t make much
difference to me”
43% choose “I wish it was abolished, it’s unnecessary and confusing”
Do All Countries Use Daylight Saving Time?
No, they do not. As you can see from the map below the
countries in green are the countries with daylight saving time for 2023.
Most of these countries started it on 26 March or
generally in March. While Egypt, Morocco, and Palestine started in April. Starting
it in the spring to extend daylight time.
But countries in the south start it at different times
of the year. Antarctica, Australia, Chile, Fiji, New Zealand, Norfolk Island, and Paraguay start in the fall months of
September, October, November, and December. For the same reason, extending
daylight time.
Things To Take Into Concern After The Start Of Daylight Saving Time
1. Although most smartphones adjust
their clocks automatically, do not rely on them to do so: Verify that it was
done by yours to prevent being late for work or meetings.
2. To avoid missing flights, those who
are traveling internationally on the next day should double-check departure
times.
3. If you are in contact with foreign friends,
make sure to check if any difference in timing will occur because of daylight
saving time.
4. The time of praying for Muslims will
change so make sure to check the new times.
History Of Daylight Saving Time
Ben Franklin first suggested the idea in 1784 as a means of preserving candles. During the First World War, when Germany, Austria, and other European countries instituted a one-hour clock shift in 1916, the first significant DST trials were conducted. DST was implemented in the US in 1918, but it was canceled a year later. During the Second World War, DST was brought back and used nationwide for the full year.
Either you are in a country that uses daylight saving
time or knows someone in a country that uses it. Or you are just curious about
it. I hope this article had the much of information that you needed to know
about DST.
