Secrets are like atoms. If you split them, they can go anywhere. “ — Unknown

Is it easy for you to keep secrets? It might be strange but for most of us, keeping a secret is more hard than telling one. It is one hell of a difficult job to do. We’ve all got secrets, and there are many types of them, such as harmless, jovial, funny, and gossipy secrets.

We all have our own secrets as well as someone else's secrets with us. And the bitter truth is that we spill it out so easily and regret later.

Secret Keeping

Why Do We Tell Secrets?

To keep a secret can be so hard and difficult for so many people. Sometimes, they feel that the only way for them to relieve themselves of such a great burden will be just to spill the beans, not minding whose ox is eventually gored in the process.

Sometimes the urge to tell someone everything is so strong that you convince your brain to tell all the secrets. However, it can have both good and bad effects.

You might break someone's trust who trusted you with their secret or sometimes you might tell a little more about yourself which was better if private.

Well the good effect could be spilling secrets sometimes leads to fun gossip with friends. Also you might feel relaxed after sharing a secret with someone.

Why Is it Important to Keep Secrets?

Keeping Secrets Build Trustworthy Relation With People

When you start keeping secrets, you have better relationships with many people. Being trustworthy is not easy in today's world.

I know you all have someone to whom you share each and every details of everything you know but just consider that if someone told you a secret with so much trust and you are breaking their trust.

Is it right to do so? Is your gossip more important than someone's serious secret? It's you who have to mature enough and decide whether a secret is shareable or not.

Helps in Living a Private Life

Not all activities of your life are to be exposed. Today's generation are so social freaks that they even share the meal they are eating.

Why can't people keep things to themselves? I'm not saying that having a social life is bad but telling everything about yourself to the masses reduces your privacy and value too. Some things look good in private only. This will help you stay away from judgments as well.

When you share a secret with someone, you are giving them power over you. They now know something that you don’t want anyone else to know. They can use it against you or they can use it to hurt you.

Is it okay to share secrets sometimes?

The emotional, mental, physical and spiritual impact of secrets are well documented. In fact, research suggests keeping secrets can significantly boost stress hormones, impact blood pressure, inhibit sleep, contribute to mental health and substance use disorders and even increase chronic pain.

Well, if you have to decide whether or not keeping your secret is justifiable, first you will have to have clarity of thoughts. Be honest with yourself. Try to answer these questions before sharing any secrets.

Whatever you are trying to hide, is it really worth hiding at the cost of your relationship with people?

Will keeping this secret harm anyone?

What could happen if this secret is revealed?

Is the potential benefit of sharing this secret worth the potential damage?

Secrets can be harmful, but they can also be valuable. When you keep a secret, you’re doing something good for yourself. You’re growing in strength, resilience, and dependability. So, the next time you feel obliged to share, consider whether it’s something that should remain secret.

It could be the most important thing you ever do. Be mature and start keeping things to yourself, the world is not much concerned about keeping your privacy as much as you do.
