1. Tell us about your background
An overweight under-confident overeater with binge eating habits and a poor lifestyle – this accurately sums up my teenage years and early twenties. But everybody has a moment that transforms their life substantially. I had that epiphanic moment in January 2015. And today, I’ve not only lost weight in a healthy way but also become a certified Nutritionist from International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) & (ACE) and successfully transformed the lives of over 3000 people from all around the globe.
2. When did you first decide that you wanted to be a Nutritionist?
As a child, I always struggled with food. I had a love-hate relationship with food. When I grew up and started taking care of what I eat it changed my life. I chose to study nutrition when I understood how food can change your life. I feel my profession allows me to change lives.
And that is what I love about being a nutritionist. After getting my certifications I started my youtube channel and Instagram page named AzraKhanFitness. It has a combined following of 2 lakh people and I educate people about health on a daily basis
3. What aspects of nutrition do you feel are most important to address when consulting with people?
The most important aspect that I share with my clients is patience and time. I always tell them that 1 day of cake or 1 day of salad cannot make or break your body. It is doing certain things, again and again, to finally one day start seeing changes. Don’t fall for quick fixes as they are never going to be sustainable.
4. According to you, what should be an ideal diet for today's youth?
There is no one diet that can fit all and today’s youth should understand that. Just because something has worked for someone does not give a guarantee that it will work for you as well. A plan that is easy for you to follow is sustainable.
It should not eliminate anything. It has to be balanced with protein carbs and fats. Fresh fruits and vegetables and sometimes some treat meals as well.
5. Your advice to our readers who are willing to follow a healthy diet plan?
As a nutritionist with over 4 years of experience in the health industry, I would like to only give one piece of advice.. Don’t follow trends and fads as they keep coming and going. Follow a plan that can be sustained forever.
6. What piece of advice would you like to give to aspiring nutritionists?
Fitness is a billion-dollar industry and there is a lot of scope for aspiring nutritionists. There is one piece of advice I want to share, just keep polishing your knowledge, and don’t think you know it all. You need to always prioritize your client/patient so listen more and talk less.
7. What are some of the biggest myths related to nutrition?
The biggest and most absurd myth is that you can eat as much as you want if it is healthy. Not true. Any food if consumed with a lack of portion control will be bad for you.
8. What are some of the mistakes people make while trying to lose weight?
The mistake I see most people make when trying to lose weight is doing too many things all at once. They start restricting calories, start working out and walking all at once. This many times can overwhelm you and you can end up giving up. Hence slow and steady is the way to go.
9. Which is your favorite book and why?
My favorite book is Eating in the Age of Dieting by Rujuta Diwekar. I Like her concepts and the book shows today’s time where people are just obsessed with not eating.
