Why Is Unlearning So Important in Life?

We have heard the saying, ‘Knowledge is wealth’. Right from our childhood, we keep learning things. Learning is in-built in humans. We learn right from our childhood like new actions, words, understanding, skills, etc.

Human behavior is like-when we learn something new, we will refer to the previous knowledge framework that was acquired by us from something else and when we find something new from the one that is already known to us, we feel open to learn that if not it would be easy for us to gain more knowledge from the things that are already known.

Meaning of Unlearning:

As the word suggests, unlearning is does not means forgetting something that we have already learnt. It does not mean you should completely get rid off knowledge of a particular thing. Unlearning simply means additive learning.

Unlearning is keeping aside things that you know already and be open to acquire more or additional knowledge about something. By unlearning, you can have a broader outlook of a particular topic than living in the current model itself.

Unlearning can be compared to erasing an existing pencil sketch to draw more colorful drawing on the sheet of paper. It does not mean that by erasing the existing drawing, you should forget how to draw or your drawing knowledge would be lost. It simply means that you erase to draw even more better.

Somethings may be false:

It will be initially difficult for you if you start your unlearning process. This is because when you begin your unlearning process in something, i.e., as you get deeper into the topic, you will get to know that certain things that you thought about that topic initially is not true in all the cases. This may also cause mental disability and mental discomfort initially for you.

But as you continue the process of unlearning, you will understand that it is a part of the process which lets you to any undirected randomness and also that leads you to less dangers.

Four ways to unlearn:

Additive knowledge helps:

The first way to unlearn is to take in additive knowledge of something that you have pretty good knowledge about. Getting to know more about our familiar areas can lead us to gain more details on that.

Another thing to remember is that it would be easy for you to do additive learning in renown areas as you would feel easier to understand the complexities as you have proper fundamental knowledge.

Experience matters:

Another way is to gain knowledge from experienced people in that area. This would require more patience, good fundamental knowledge and willingness to learn.

This method may take some more time than other methods but it would be worth it. Experienced people will not be able to provide you any theoretical knowledge but, the knowledge that they provide you through their experience would be so much helpful than other ways.

Travel to know:

The other way to unlearn is by travelling. Yes, through travelling you can unlearn things and gain additive knowledge through people from various parts of the country or world.

Through this you can differentiate the learnings that you already had and this would also help you to know the variations or differences of a particular thing among different people and in different areas.

Be experimental:

Experimenting new things and learning from them helps you to maintain that knowledge with you till your lifetime. We live one life and it is best to experiment and learn and know how things work.

It is also important to teach or share things learnt to future generations and through that you serve to the society and also you might get to learn new ideas and techniques from people.

Thus, the process of unlearning takes on even greater significance in today's dynamic business landscape. As new challenges continually emerge, it becomes necessary to cultivate an innovative problem-solving attitude that enables us to identify solutions and break new ground.

It empowers us to adapt, unburdened by the baggage of the past, and embrace change with resilience and openness. By embracing the power of unlearning, we can pave the way for personal and collective transformation, enabling us to create a brighter and more inclusive future.
