The Network of DTC Buses - Connecting Every Part of Delhi

DTC which stands for Delhi Transport Corporation is the largest CNG-powered bus service operator in the world with a fleet size of over 7,000 buses on over 460 city routes and 7 NCR routes. The network of DTC buses is the largest network of public transport in the world which does not emit any pollution in the city.

DTC buses- A popular means of transport
According to the outcome budget report prepared by the planning department of Delhi Government, an average of 24.72 lakh passengers travel on DTC buses everyday while in the years 2021-22 and 2020-21 it witnessed average daily ridership of 15.62 lakh and 12.24 lakh passengers on DTC buses respectively. Buses are the most popular means of transport catering to about 60% of Delhi’s total demand.


Providing employment to the people in Delhi

According to data DTC provides employment to over 31,000 people which include drivers, conductors, mechanics, engineers and administrative staff. Delhi has one of India’s largest bus transport systems.


Ownership of DTC buses

The buses are owned and operated by Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). The Delhi Transport Corporation was incorporated in May 1948 by the Indian government for local bus services. There are many types of buses owned and operated by DTC- Green, Orange, Blue, and Red. The Green colored buses are non- A/C with the cheapest price, the Red and Blue colored buses have the A/C, so the fare in these buses is more than the Green buses. The buses in orange color are the result of a partnership between the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS).


Free rides to Women in DTC buses

The Delhi Government launched a free-ride scheme for women in the year 2019. The scheme allowed all the women to travel for free in DTC buses, both AC and non-AC. Under this scheme a different ticket has been designed for the women, “Pink Pass”. Women have the option to purchase the ticket, for free.The free-ride scheme aims to ensure the safety and security of female passengers and make transportation smooth for them. The Delhi Government has also appointed the marshals in the DTC buses for the security of women and to ensure that the buses are not so crowded.


DTC Bus routes and how one can track them

In New Delhi, there are 4270 bus stops along 732 bus routes operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). Bus services provided by Delhi Transport Corporation are widely dispersed around the city. With this bus network, practically every area in Delhi is connected.

All the details about the buses can be checked by downloading one of the many available apps that provide all DTC info, for example “ONE” application the DTC buses’ website. With this app and website, one can check all updates on a bus route including bus delays, real-time status info, changes of stops locations, changes of routes and any other service changes.


Earning of DTC buses

According to officials, DTC’s earning through the sale of tickets was Rs 30 per kilometer in the year 2022-23, while it was recorded at Rs 22.94 in 2020-21 and Rs 22.28 in 2021-22. However, DTC’s per kilometer operational cost registered an increase in 2022-23 leading to higher losses for the state-transport utility. Now it has increased the fare price because the price of CNG is increasing frequently. These days the price of CNG is 73.61 per kg, according to Indraprastha Gas Ltd.


Budget for Public Transport

Delhi Government allocated Rs. 3500 crore for upgradation of public transport, this year (2023-24).The Delhi Budget was presented by Kailash Gahlot, Finance Minister of Delhi. He said that the number of buses has been increased to 7,379. He said Delhi will have a fleet of nearly 10,000 buses for public transport, with 75% electric buses among the newly inducted vehicles.

Today the majority of people use the services provided by DTC on a daily basis. Because it is not pocket friendly but also environment friendly. It is also easily accessible and well connected to almost all parts of the NCR. One can travel from one part of Delhi to another by DTC buses.
