Zaynul Jiwani - To All Aspiring Artists, Irrespective of Your Role in the Creative Process Dedicate Yourself to Consistent Practice and Skill Refinement (Music Producer)

In 2022, I made a significant shift, becoming a music content creator, translating contemporary trends into catchy meme songs.

1. Tell us more about your background and journey.

I'm a Music Producer & Composer currently based in London, UK. With over 7 years of professional music production experience, I specialize in creating music for Commercial Ad films, Radio Jingles, and Independent Artists. I was born in a small town, Diu. After completing my schooling there, I moved to Ahmedabad for further studies, where I passionately pursued music alongside my academics.

Following my education, I made a pivotal move to Mumbai to embark on a musical journey. In 2019, I moved to the UK, and established a studio here, maintaining a strong connection with my clients in India, UAE, and Canada, working remotely on various projects.

2. When did you first decide you wanted to pursue music and how did you start?

My journey with music began at a young age. I started playing the piano at the age of 8, and by 14, I was already immersed in creating and recording music. Growing up in an environment steeped in Indian Classical Music, I had the privilege of learning from my guruji during my school days. This period included live performances, where I played the harmonium, and tabla, and showcased my vocal skills in local events and competitions.

After completing high school, I decided to turn my passion into a profession. I started creating music for local artists and assisted well-known producers in the industry. In Mumbai, my musical contributions extended to renowned brands like Crocs, Spotify, ICC World Cup 2020, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and more. In 2022, I made a significant shift, becoming a music content creator, translating contemporary trends into catchy meme songs.

3. Who is your favorite artist and why?

My all-time favorite artist is A.R.Rehman. His music, which has been a constant companion since my childhood, possesses a unique quality that feels like a blessing. Listening to his compositions creates a magical connection with the energy of the universe. A dream of mine is to collaborate with him one day, not only for the incredible opportunity but also to witness and learn from his creative process.

4. Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a singer?

In this digital era, singers have a multitude of opportunities beyond traditional avenues like movies and labels. Independent artists can carve their own paths, creating and seizing opportunities. Singers can lend their voices to commercial songs in movies, participate in live shows, and gain exposure to a global audience. The landscape is vast, offering ample room for creative exploration.

5. Is formal training required or can one train purely on the basis of talent?

While innate musical talent is undoubtedly a gift, I believe formal training is crucial to refine and elevate that talent. Even if someone is self-taught, understanding music theory becomes pivotal in effectively conveying emotions through music. Music is an ever-evolving ocean of knowledge, and a foundation, in theory, provides the necessary tools to navigate and express oneself authentically.

6. What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring artists?

To all aspiring artists, irrespective of your role in the creative process—be it a singer, lyricist, composer, mix engineer, or music producer—dedicate yourself to consistent practice and skill refinement. In the realm of music, there are no shortcuts. Progress is achieved through small, daily steps, and growth becomes evident over an extended period. Challenge yourself regularly, surpass your own limits, and witness the cumulative impact of your efforts.

7. Which is your favorite book and why?

While my reading habits aren't extensive, my focus centers on music theory books. A standout favorite is "Music Theory for Computer Musicians" by Michael Hewitt. I appreciate its comprehensive approach, providing valuable insights for aspiring self-taught music producers, especially in the context of programming musical elements on a computer.
