Deepika Thiyagarajan - Practicing at Home Led Me to Mysore, India, for a 500-Hour Teacher Training Course (Yoga Instructor)

"Yoga is a journey of self-discovery. It's about cultivating awareness, balance, and inner peace. My goal is to guide students to find joy and fulfillment both on and off the mat"

1. Could you share a glimpse of your personal journey with yoga? How did you discover this path, and what pivotal moments shaped your practice and teaching?

I was introduced to advanced yogic meditation in 2018, thanks to my best friend who recommended it for stress relief. It immediately calmed my mind, but I lost touch with it as life progressed. In 2020, during a period of emotional upheaval, I returned to yoga, which transformed my life. Practicing at home led me to Mysore, India, for a 500-hour teacher training course in Ashtanga yoga. This deepened my understanding and inspired me to pursue a master's in yogic science. Yoga has continually provided me with peace and clarity, transforming my life in unimaginable ways. Teaching allows me to share this journey and learn from my students, making yoga a lifelong learning process.

2. How did you get into Ashtanga yoga, and what keeps you passionate about teaching it?

I discovered Ashtanga yoga during a challenging period in my life. Its structured, dynamic approach, focusing on breath, alignment, and flow, resonated with me deeply. The philosophical foundations and holistic life emphasis of Ashtanga further fueled my passion. Teaching Ashtanga yoga is fulfilling as I witness the profound impact it has on my students, both on and off the mat. The sense of community that develops through shared practice is incredibly inspiring.

3. What’s your teaching philosophy that resonates with your students?

My teaching philosophy focuses on creating a welcoming space where students feel empowered to explore and grow. I emphasize mindful guidance, encouraging students to tune into their breath and body and offer a personalized approach to suit different abilities. For me, yoga is about holistic well-being, integrating breath work and meditation. Witnessing students gain confidence and resilience, and fostering a sense of community, is deeply rewarding. My goal is to guide students through a journey of self-discovery and growth, helping them find joy and fulfillment in their practice.

4. How do you help students cultivate awareness during practice?

I begin each class with deep, focused breathing to help students ground their thoughts and stay present. During physical postures, I use detailed cues to encourage body awareness and offer alternative postures for inclusivity. I also incorporate moments of reflection, encouraging students to observe their thoughts without judgment. This practice builds self-awareness and personal growth. Sharing insights into yoga’s broader philosophy, such as mindfulness and compassion, adds a deeper layer to their practice.

5. What advice would you give someone new to Ashtanga yoga?

Start with the basics of the primary series and focus on your breath to stay steady and mindful. Regular, even brief, practice builds strength and flexibility over time. Listen to your body, use props if needed, and avoid pushing too hard. Learning from a qualified teacher can guide you on proper techniques. Be patient with your progress and take breaks to avoid strain. Enjoy exploring the practice at your own pace and its transformative benefits.

6. If you could teach yoga to any historical figure, who would it be and why?

If I could teach yoga to any historical figure, it would be Adolf Hitler. Yoga promotes inner peace, self-awareness, and compassion. Teaching him yoga might have redirected his focus toward healing and understanding instead of destruction and hatred. It could have encouraged a more inclusive and compassionate leadership approach, potentially changing history for the better.
