Palak Singh - Actress From Criminal Justice (Actress)

"Every passion in any field and the craze to achieve it pushes you to make things happen, no matter the odds."

1. Can you tell us a bit about your journey from Kanpur to becoming a recognized face in the Indian entertainment industry?

I was born in Kanpur but grew up in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Due to my father’s job as a civil project manager, we moved frequently, and I completed my schooling in Prayagraj and later studied in Gujarat (Jamnagar). From an early age, I was passionate about dance and sports, and this passion eventually guided me toward the entertainment industry.

Although I graduated as an electrical engineer and even competed as a national-level runner, my heart was always in the arts. During my second year of engineering in Jamnagar, I participated in the Miss Gujarat beauty contest and auditioned for Dance India Dance. These experiences solidified my love for performing, which later transitioned into acting. With the support of my mother, I eventually moved to Mumbai to pursue this dream.

2. You started your career with modeling and reality shows like “Dance India Dance.” How did these early experiences shape your approach to acting?

Participating in Dance India Dance in 2013 was a transformative experience. Out of 5,000 participants, I was selected for the Mumbai round, where only 50 were chosen. Although I was not a trained dancer and got eliminated during the choreography round, this experience taught me resilience and the importance of following one’s passion. Despite the challenges and my ongoing engineering studies, I knew I wanted to be in front of the camera. My mother’s unwavering support helped me move to Mumbai, where I began auditioning for acting roles. These early experiences instilled in me the discipline and perseverance needed to succeed in the industry.

3. You’ve played diverse roles in web series like “Criminal Justice” and “Palang Tod.” Which role has been the most challenging for you so far, and why?

Working in "Criminal Justice" across all three seasons was an incredible experience, especially collaborating with industry veterans like Pankaj Tripathi and directors like Tigmanshu Dhulia and Rohan Sippy. Although I’ve played various roles, I can’t pinpoint one as the most challenging.

However, I found the short film "Pizza MMS," directed by Pratibha Sharma and produced by Yashpal Sharma, particularly demanding. The film, shot in a single take, required intense focus and precision. Playing the character of Sona Rajpal in this one-shot, 12-13 minute film was a challenging but rewarding experience, earning me an award at the Haryana International Film Festival.

4. Who are some of the actors or filmmakers that have inspired you throughout your career?

Filmmakers like Satyajit Ray and Tigmanshu Dhulia, and actors like Priyanka Chopra, Radhika Apte, and Sushant Singh Rajput, have greatly influenced me. While I admire their craft, I wouldn’t say they’ve inspired me throughout my entire career. However, I do look up to them and their work.

5. Are there any upcoming projects or roles that you’re particularly excited about and can share with us?

Yes, I have two upcoming projects that I’m excited about. One is a theatrical film titled "Khalnigranaaya," and the other is an item dance song in a Malayalam film called "Police."

6. How do you continue to grow and evolve as an actor? Are there any specific techniques or practices you follow?

Observation is key for me as an actor. I believe in observing emotions and behaviors in real life and bringing that authenticity to my performances. I consider myself a director’s actor, fully trusting and following their vision. To justify a character, I immerse myself in understanding, imagining, and feeling the character’s emotions, which helps me portray them naturally on screen.

7. What advice would you give to young actors who are just starting out in the industry?

Auditioning is essential to improving your craft, so never tire of it. Regardless of how much work you’ve done, auditions are a constant part of an actor’s life. It’s important to work on your skills, practice in front of a mirror, and come into the industry with a mindset ready to accept challenges.

Consistency is crucial, and you must be prepared for the ups and downs of this unpredictable field. Avoid getting distracted by the glamour, parties, and networking; focus on honing your craft and investing time in your growth. An actor should also meet different types of people to better understand and portray a variety of characters.

8. If you could play any character from a book or movie, who would it be and why?

I’m drawn to roles with grey shades rather than purely positive ones. I would love to play Sonia Roy from the movie Aitraaz, a role originally portrayed by Priyanka Chopra. I feel that’s the kind of character I could truly embody.
