Kaylee Defer Interview - ‘Gossip Girl’ Was Such a Fantastic Experience for Me (American Actress)

"Taking a step back allowed me to connect more deeply with myself and my loved ones."

Q. Let’s start with your career. Most people recognize you from 'Gossip Girl', where you played Ivy Dickens. What was it like stepping into such a complex character on such a popular show?

'Gossip Girl' was such a fantastic experience for me. Ivy was a challenging character because she was constantly evolving. One minute she’s a con artist, the next she’s trying to make a fresh start. It was a lot to keep up with, but I loved every second of it. Working with such a talented cast and crew was an honor.

Q. Ivy was a fascinating character. How did you approach playing someone with so many secrets and layers?

Ivy was like an onion! Every time I thought I understood her, there’d be a new twist. I tried to focus on her motivations — what she wanted, why she was doing what she was doing, and how her actions affected her relationships. She had a lot of flaws but also a vulnerability that I tried to bring out. I really connected with her search for belonging.

Q. Since 'Gossip Girl', you’ve been busy with other projects, but you also took some time to focus on family life. How has that transition been for you?

It’s been wonderful. Acting will always be a huge part of my life, but family is my foundation. Taking a step back allowed me to connect more deeply with myself and my loved ones. It wasn’t always easy, but I learned so much about balance and the importance of being present.

Q. Speaking of balance, how do you manage to juggle your career and family life? Do you have any tips?

I think setting clear boundaries is key. When I’m working, I’m fully committed, but when I’m home, I try to leave work at the door. It’s about creating moments where you’re truly present. I also try not to be too hard on myself if things don’t go perfectly — I’ve realized that balance is less about perfection and more about being adaptable.

Q. That’s a wonderful perspective. Looking ahead, are there any new projects you’re excited about?

Yes! I’ve been working on a project that’s very close to my heart — it’s still under wraps, but it’s a mix of drama and adventure, with a lot of emotional depth. It’s one of those stories that makes you reflect on life. I’m excited for everyone to see it!

Q. Before we wrap up, do you have any advice for aspiring actors?

Absolutely! I’d say, don’t lose sight of why you started. There are so many ups and downs in this industry, but if you stay true to yourself and your love for the craft, that passion will carry you through. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, and never stop learning. There’s always room to grow!
