"Each vocal project, whether it’s for animation or commercials, lets me dive into another dimension of character-building."
Playing Janice was an absolute joy. She came into my life unexpectedly and was just supposed to be a one-off character. But Janice’s energy, her voice, her laugh – it all clicked so naturally. I felt free to have fun and go all in, and the audience connected with her in ways none of us could have imagined. It’s amazing to have been part of something that resonates years later!
Q. Did you have any idea that this character would become so iconic?
Honestly, not at all! Initially, it was just another audition, but I wanted her to stand out. That laugh, the accent – it was my way of making Janice a little extra. I never expected she’d be invited back so often, and I certainly didn’t think she’d become such a cultural icon. It’s a testament to the brilliant writing and the warmth of the 'Friends' cast and crew.
Q. Since 'Friends', you’ve taken on a variety of roles. Do you find that people are always looking for a “Janice” in your characters?
Oh, absolutely! But that’s natural, isn’t it? When you play a character that’s so memorable, people want a bit of that magic in every role. I’ve been lucky, though, to explore different types of characters and to work on projects that allow me to flex different acting muscles. Janice is a beloved part of my journey, but there’s more to discover.
Q. You’ve done voice acting as well, which is a world where only your voice conveys the character. Do you find that challenging?
It’s definitely a different skill set, but I love it! When you’re behind the mic, you’re focused purely on voice, and it forces you to be precise in your delivery. There’s an incredible freedom in knowing that no one can see you, but they can feel everything through your voice. Each vocal project, whether it’s for animation or commercials, lets me dive into another dimension of character-building.
Q. With such a rich background in comedy, what would you say are the unique challenges of comedic acting?
Comedy has such a special rhythm. Timing is everything, and you really have to trust yourself and your castmates. Good comedy actors make everything look spontaneous, but there’s so much thought and precision behind the scenes. It’s all about finding those small moments, the pauses, the looks, that make a line or gesture funny. The audience has to feel the truth in it, or it just falls flat.
Q. It sounds like comedy requires a certain vulnerability, almost like you’re exposing a part of yourself.
That’s exactly it. Comedy is very vulnerable. You’re taking risks, going big, sometimes even looking a bit silly, but that’s what makes it authentic. If you’re too careful, it doesn’t land. You have to commit fully to the absurd, the outrageous, and the unexpected.
Q. Any advice for aspiring actors who want to create memorable characters like Janice?
Be authentic and don’t be afraid to experiment! When you’re building a character, focus on finding their voice – not just literally, but who they are and how they see the world. Janice’s laugh came from a very specific place of joy and surprise. Go beyond the script and imagine how your character feels, thinks, and reacts. And most importantly, enjoy the process. Acting should feel like play.
Q. Beautifully put! Lastly, what’s on the horizon for you?
I’m exploring more projects, some on screen and some behind it! I’ve also been involved in community work, and I’m passionate about storytelling that uplifts and empowers. I’m grateful for the opportunities that continue to come my way and excited to see what’s next.
