From Tragedy to Timeless Talent

Alan was born on 21 February 1946 in the district of Acton, London to a housewife Margaret Doreen Rose and factory worker, house painter, decorator and Second World War Aircraft fitter Bernard William Rickman.

He was born with a tight jaw which later on contributed in developing the deep tone of voice and his languid delivery for which he would become famous later on. His childhood in the early stages was marked with tragedy as he lost his father at the age of 8 owing to cancer. Pretty awful, isn’t it? Who would have believed that this boy with a tight jaw and languid voice was destined to greatness.

The First Breakthrough

After 8 years of being part of theatrical productions and stage groups, he got his major cinematic breakthrough in one of the greatest action films of all time: Die Hard starring one of the greatest stars from America, Bruce Willis. His portrayal of the primary antagonist, Hans Gruber went one to become one of the groundbreaking portrayals of cinematic history. It was considered as the 17th Greatest Movie Character out of 100 by the Empire Magazine. Pretty amazing, isn’t it? Prior to this, he already achieved his first televised breakthrough in The Barchester Chronicles (1982), a popular British television serial. But what comes next only gave him a place in the hearts of a beloved world of fantasy.

Unforgettable Contributions in Harry Potter

Among the various roles which Alan has played along the years, he got emotionally connected to the family audience by the role of Severus Snape from the Harry Potter franchise. Throughout the franchise, Alan’s presence left an indelible mark on both the book and movie lovers of Harry Potter. Even today, the lovers of the Harry Potter franchise have never forgotten the immense richness of talent which he had enormously given to one of the beloved yet misunderstood characters of the franchise in bringing it to life upon the big screen. I’m pretty sure most of us would have come across Harry Potter once in our lifetime? If not, check it out and let the magic begin.

A Heartbreaking Demise

On January 14, 2016 literally five years after the end of the beloved Harry Potter franchise, we lost one of the most beloved faces in the history of Cinema. Alan’s death was mourned tremendously across the world ranging from popular film celebrities to the general masses. He was given a tearful tribute at the London Film Critics’ Circle Awards by one of his beloved fellow admirers, Kate Winslet. He passed away due to cancer at its terminal stage which he had revealed to only his close confidants. His demise has been a shock to many of his fellow co-actors with whom he has worked with in the past such as Ralph Fiennes, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint etc.

Honoring a Legacy of Timeless Talent

As an emotional yet beautiful tribute to him, a memorial was built beneath the "Platform 9¾" sign at London King’s Cross Railway Station. At a West End performance of the day, he was ceremoniously remembered as one of the greatest legends of British theatre. On 30 April 2023, He was commemorated by one of the most popular search engine, Google with the help of the iconic Google Doodle. Alan’s journey will always be remembered as one who was an active-spirit with an ineffable and cynical wit and who had a clarity over many things. An edited collection of Rickman’s diaries was published in 2022 comprising of his personal experiences from 1995-2015 under an amazing title known as “Madly, Deeply: The Alan Rickman Diaries”.

His passing may have an irreplaceable gap in the world of storytelling and cinema but his legacy will always be taken as an inspiration for the upcoming generations to come.
