"It’s empowering to take control of your narrative, and I’ve had so many touching responses from people who’ve been helped by my experiences."
Q. You’ve had such a dynamic career with so many memorable roles. Let’s start with “Modern Family.” How did being on such a groundbreaking show shape you, both as an actress and as a person?
Thanks for having me! Being on 'Modern Family' was such an amazing journey. I joined when I was 18, and the show ran for over a decade. Growing up on a set like that was unique because not only was it a huge hit, but it was like a real family in a way. I learned so much from everyone, and it definitely shaped my sense of humor and my work ethic. Comedy can be intimidating, but that show gave me the confidence to try new things.
Q. 'Modern Family' definitely set a high bar for sitcoms! After the show wrapped, you’ve taken on new projects, like 'Love Island USA'. How has that transition been?
It’s been so exciting! Hosting 'Love Island USA' is a totally different vibe. I’m a hopeless romantic, so getting to be part of people’s love stories—even just as a host—is really special. I also enjoy being on the other side, kind of guiding things without necessarily being the focus.
Q. So many people are inspired by your openness about your health challenges. You've been vocal about your journey with kidney dysplasia. What made you decide to share that part of your life so publicly?
I felt it was important to use my platform to be honest. Living with a chronic illness can feel isolating, and there were times when I felt very alone. By sharing my story, I hoped to help others who might be dealing with something similar feel less alone. It’s empowering to take control of your narrative, and I’ve had so many touching responses from people who’ve been helped by my experiences. It’s one of the most rewarding aspects of my career, honestly.
Q. That’s amazing, Sarah. It’s such an important message. You’re also very active on social media. Do you feel it’s given you a new way to connect with fans?
Definitely! Social media lets me be a bit more candid, share random moments, and talk directly to people who’ve followed my journey for years. It’s also nice to be able to set the record straight myself when rumors pop up, instead of letting them spiral. But I also try to keep it light and fun most of the time. My fans get to see my silly side and get a glimpse of my life beyond work.
Q. Speaking of connecting with fans, we’ve heard you’re working on some new projects. Can you tell us a bit about what’s next?
I’m so excited about what’s coming up! I’m doing a mix of things—there’s a new show in development where I get to play a very different type of character, which is both exciting and a little nerve-wracking! And I’m also diving into some behind-the-scenes work, exploring the world of producing. I feel like it’s the right time to try new things and challenge myself in ways I haven’t before.
Q. You’ve had such a varied career. What advice would you give to young actors or creatives trying to find their path in the industry?
I’d say be patient, stay true to yourself, and don’t be afraid to take risks. There’s no set formula in this business, so it’s really about finding your own way. Embrace your uniqueness, because that’s what makes you stand out. And take care of your mental and physical health—it’s crucial to be grounded in such a crazy industry.
