Beginning of a Journey - Vijetha

Allu Arjun made his first on-screen appearance as a child artist in the Telugu film "Vijetha" in 1985 in which he played the role of Saratha’s son. The film was produced by Allu Aravind (Allu Arjun’s father), and Allu Arjun was just 3 years old when he was chosen for the role. Later on, he acted in “Daddy” in 2001, in which he made a cameo appearance as Gopi Krishna.

He made his adult debut from the film at 21 years old through the film “Gangotri” in 2003. Allu Aravind was the producer of this film. His role in this film won him the Nandi Award for Best Debut Hero, Santosham Best Young Performers Award and the CineMAA Award for Best Male Debut.

His film “Arya” (a romantic action film), released in 2004 went on to become a major breakthrough in his career and has now become a cult-classic. The film earned Allu Arjun another Nandi Award and a Santosham Best Young Performers Award. He also won the 2004 Gemini TV Award in the Best Actor Category. Seeing its success, a sequel “Arya 2” was released in 2009, which secured a nomination for Allu Arjun in the Best Actor Category in the 57th Filmfare Awards South.

He next starred in V. V. Vinayak's “Bunny” in 2005, playing the eponymous lead, a college student. This role earned him huge recognition for his efforts, mannerisms and dancing. His next film was the musical love story “Happy” in 2006, which was a moderate success in the Telugu film industry, but a blockbuster hit in the Malayalam film industry, which gained him a huge fan-following in Kerala.

Exploring Various Role and Growing the Career

He then starred in an action film called “Desamuduru” in 2007, in which he played the role of Bala Govindam, a fearless journalist who falls for a woman with a darker past. The film was a commercial success, fetching him a Santosham Film Award, a CineMAA Award and his second nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu. 

His next film was “Parugu” in 2008, where he played the role of Krishna, a happy-go-lucky man from Hyderabad who helps his friend to elope with his love, only to experience the wrath of the woman's father and the emotional struggle he felt. This film won him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu and another Nandi Special Jury Award. 

In 2010, he had two releases: “Varudu” and “Vedam”. Though Varudu was a box office bomb, Vedam went on to create history. The hyperlink anthology film Vedam was Allu Arjun's first A-rated film. He played the role of Anand "Cable" Raju, a cable operator hailing from Jubilee Hills (Hyderabad) slum. His performance in this film is seen as his best till then and still counts as one of his best performances till date. This film earned him his second Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu. He next appeared in V. V. Vinayak's action film “Badrinath” in 2011, in which he played the role of Badri, a modern-day Indian samurai. This was Allu Arjun's second A-rated film which won him the 2011 TSR-TV9 Award for Best Hero and a nomination for CineMAA Award for Best Actor. 

His next film, “Julayi”, an action comedy, released in 2012. He was nominated for the SIIMA Award for Best Actor – Telugu, for his performance in the film. The next year, he starred in Puri Jagannadh's action thriller “Iddarammayilatho”, in which his performance was highly praised. It was around this time that he was gaining popularity as a “stylish star”. 

Becoming One of the Most Prominent Public Figure

In 2014, he appeared in a cameo role in the action thriller film “Yevadu”, alongside Kajal Aggarwal. Allu Arjun was highly praised and his performance in the film showed what an actor can do even in a short role, in the few minutes he packed his experience, internalized the character. 

His next film was Surender Reddy's “Race Gurram” in 2014, which went on to become Allu Arjun's first ₹100 crore grosser. He won his third Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu and was nominated for the SIIMA Award for Best Actor – Telugu for the second time for his performance in this film. Allu Arjun produced and acted in a short film “I Am That Change”, which was released in August 2014. The film gained a lot of appreciation. He was next seen working in Trivikram Srinivas's “S/O Satyamurthy” in 2015. His performance in the film earned him his seventh nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu. 

Following this he appeared in the biographical action film “Rudhramadevi”. The film based on the life of Rudrama Devi, is the first Indian 3D historical film. His performance received a lot of appreciation and was called "impeccable" and "whistle-worthy”. His role in this film won him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor – Telugu and he became the only actor to win both the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu and the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor – Telugu. He also won three other awards for his performance, including Nandi Award for Best Character Actor. 

In 2016, he acted in “Sarrainodu”, directed by Boyapati Srinu. Although the film received negative reviews, it was a major commercial success at the box office and Allu Arjun called it a "landmark film" in his career. His performance in the film won him the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor – Telugu, in addition to his eighth nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu. In 2017, “DJ: Duvvada Jagannadham” was released. Though the film's screenplay was criticised, Allu Arjun's performance was highly praised. 

In 2018, “Naa Peru Surya” was released. Upon release, the film received mixed reviews and was successful at the box office. A critic called his performance as Allu Arjun's "career-best" and cited it as the "biggest strength to the film". His next film, “Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo” is his career's highest grosser and stands among the highest-grossing Telugu films.

Pushpa and Beyond...

In 2021, he did his next film, “Pushpa: The Rise”. The film is based on the red sanders smuggling in the Seshachalam Hills in Andhra Pradesh and Allu Arjun plays Pushpa Raj, a coolie-turned-smuggler, alongside Fahadh Faasil and Rashmika Mandanna. The film received mixed reviews but his performance was praised. 

The film proved to be a major commercial success, grossing over ₹350 crore and emerged as the highest grossing Indian film in 2021. He won his fourth Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu alongside National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance, of which the latter became a first for a Telugu film actor. Allu Arjun's performance along with one of the dialogues from the film, "Thaggede Le" achieved cult status and made a huge impact in the Indian pop culture scene.

A sequel titled “Pushpa 2: The Rule” was released on 5 December 2024. Made on a budget of ₹400–500 crore, the film is one of the most expensive Indian films. With a runtime of 200 minutes, it is one of the longest Indian films ever made. Setting several box-office records, it has earned over ₹1,500 crore (US$180 million) worldwide, emerging as the highest-grossing Indian film of the year, second highest-grossing film in India, second highest-grossing Telugu film, and third highest-grossing Indian film. 

Allu Arjun's dedication and hardwork is evident in his performances. Even after all the fame and success, he kept on challenging himself and emerged triumphant.

On 4 December 2024, a woman died and her young son was critically injured after a stampede occurred during the screening of Pushpa 2: The Rule at the Sandhya movie theater in RTC X Roads, Hyderabad. A case was later filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on the film's unit, Allu Arjun, the owner of the movie theatre and Arjun's security team. Arjun was arrested by the Hyderabad City Police on 13 December 2024 over the said charges. However, a few hours later he was granted an interim bail by the Telangana High Court. 

He received immense support from his fans and other celebrities during that time. He has proven repeatedly that being an actor requires real talent which comes from within and has to be continuously improved through hard work, not through nepotism. He is one of the most prominent and most loved and respected celebrities in the south and is now known in the entire country because of his talent and blockbuster films.
