"Entrepreneurship is a rollercoaster ride, and I’ve had my fair share of highs and lows."
The inspiration for Flatheads came from a simple problem: finding stylish, comfortable, and breathable footwear for daily wear. My co-founder and I noticed that the Indian footwear market was saturated with formal shoes and sports sneakers, but there wasn’t much focus on casual, versatile shoes for everyday use. That’s when we decided to create Flatheads—a brand designed for people who hustle all day but want their feet to stay cool and comfortable.
Q. Your brand has gained a reputation for its unique materials. Can you tell us more about the innovative fabrics you use?
Absolutely. One of the key differentiators for Flatheads is our use of sustainable and breathable materials. For example, we were among the first in India to use bamboo fiber, which is naturally antibacterial, moisture-wicking, and incredibly soft. We’ve also explored materials like Tencel and banana fibers. These fabrics are not only eco-friendly but also cater to the needs of people living in tropical climates like ours, where breathable footwear is a must.
Q. You’ve had quite a journey as an entrepreneur. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?
Entrepreneurship is a rollercoaster ride, and I’ve had my fair share of highs and lows. One of the biggest challenges was launching Flatheads right before the pandemic hit. We had to pivot our strategies, focus on digital channels, and rethink how we engaged with customers. Another challenge has been educating the Indian consumer about the value of premium materials and sustainable practices. It’s a gradual process, but the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
Q. Your appearance on Shark Tank India created quite a buzz. How has that experience impacted Flatheads and you personally?
Shark Tank India was a transformative experience. It gave us a platform to showcase Flatheads to a national audience. The exposure not only boosted our sales but also brought in a lot of valuable feedback from customers. Personally, it was humbling and inspiring to see the support we received from viewers and entrepreneurs across the country. It reaffirmed my belief in the product and our mission.
Q. Let’s talk about sustainability. How does Flatheads incorporate eco-conscious practices into its operations?
Sustainability is at the core of what we do. From using natural and biodegradable materials to minimizing waste during production, we’re constantly finding ways to reduce our environmental footprint. Our packaging is made from recycled materials, and we’re exploring initiatives like a recycling program for old Flatheads shoes. We believe in creating a brand that not only serves customers but also respects the planet.
Q. What does the future hold for Flatheads? Are there any exciting developments you can share with us?
The future is all about growth and innovation. We’re working on expanding our product line to include more styles and sizes, catering to a wider audience. International expansion is also on the horizon, as we see potential in markets with similar climates and lifestyles. Beyond that, we’re investing in research to explore even more sustainable materials and technologies that can elevate the comfort and functionality of our footwear.
Q. As an entrepreneur, what advice would you give to someone starting their own business?
First, identify a real problem that you’re passionate about solving. Your passion will fuel you through the toughest times. Second, listen to your customers. Their feedback is invaluable and will guide you in the right direction. Lastly, don’t be afraid to fail. Every setback is an opportunity to learn and grow. Resilience is what separates successful entrepreneurs from the rest.
Q. One final question—how do you personally define success?
For me, success is about creating something meaningful that positively impacts people’s lives. It’s not just about numbers or revenue; it’s about building a brand that resonates with customers and stands the test of time. If we can inspire others to pursue their dreams and make a difference, that’s the ultimate success.
