Mansi Mao - B-Town Celebrity Makeup Artist Speaks About Her Experience (Hair and Makeup Artist)

"Healthy skin makes makeup look so much better. Don’t be afraid to experiment and, most importantly, be comfortable with what you choose. Confidence always shines through."

Q. How did you get into the world of hair and makeup?

I’ve always been interested in art and creativity from a young age, and makeup felt like an extension of that. I started experimenting with makeup in my teenage years and realized I had a knack for it. Over time, I took professional training and began working with small shoots and personal projects before finally stepping into the world of digital content.

Q. How did your collaboration with Prajakta Koli, aka MostlySane, come about?

I’ve been working with Prajakta for a while now. Our first project together was for a YouTube video shoot, and I instantly connected with her energy and vision. It was a natural fit. Prajakta’s style is unique, and I love how she embraces different looks for each project. We’ve developed a strong working relationship over time, and it’s been wonderful to see her content evolve.

Q. As a hair and makeup artist for a digital influencer, you must be part of a creative process that involves various roles. What does your role typically entail in the content creation process?

My role starts before the camera even starts rolling. I work closely with Prajakta to understand the theme of the video, the mood she wants to convey, and her outfit choices. Based on that, I decide on the best hairstyle and makeup look to complement the entire vision. Sometimes we go for a glamorous look, while other times it’s more natural or quirky—it all depends on the content. I also make sure that the look stays intact throughout the shoot, which can often be long hours.

Q. What’s the most challenging part of working on a project with Prajakta Koli?

The most challenging part, I’d say, is ensuring that the look stays fresh and intact, especially when we’re shooting for long hours. Lighting and angles can change, and I have to make sure the makeup and hair remain flawless for every shot. Luckily, Prajakta is super easy to work with and understands the process, so it feels like a team effort.

Q. How do you stay inspired and keep your work?

It’s all about staying creative and constantly experimenting with new trends and techniques. I follow other artists and explore different styles from around the world. I also love working with celebs who are not afraid to try new looks. She challenges me to think outside the box, which keeps things exciting. Whether it's something bold or a more classic style, there’s always room for creativity.

Q. Makeup trends change quickly—what are some of the latest trends you’re excited about?

One trend I’m really loving right now is the dewy, natural makeup look. It’s all about glowing, healthy skin with minimal products. I’m also seeing a resurgence of bold eyeliner and dramatic lashes. It’s a fun contrast to the minimalist looks we’ve been seeing in the past few years. Another trend is personalized makeup, where people are creating unique looks based on their personality or specific features, which I find exciting.

Q. As someone who works closely with influencers, do you have any tips for people who want to experiment with their own hair and makeup looks for photoshoots or videos?

Absolutely! My first tip would be to always start with skincare. Healthy skin makes makeup look so much better. Second, don’t be afraid to experiment. Try different hairstyles and makeup techniques to see what suits you best. And most importantly, be comfortable with what you choose. Confidence always shines through, and if you feel good, it’ll show in the photos or videos.

Q. What advice would you give to aspiring makeup artists or anyone wanting to break into the industry?

I’d say practice is key. Keep experimenting, take courses, and learn from other professionals. Also, build your portfolio and never be afraid to reach out to people. Networking is so important, but always be patient—it takes time to build a solid reputation. Most importantly, love what you do, because that passion will keep you going through the tough times.

Q. Lastly, what’s next for you? Any exciting projects or collaborations on the horizon?

There’s always something exciting on the horizon! I’m looking forward to more collaborations with Hobbart Films and other creative projects in the works. I’m also planning to explore more in the fashion and bridal makeup space, which has always intrigued me. So, stay tuned for some new ventures!
