Movie Review - Identity 2003

The main purpose of our lives is to find out our identity. How many times do we ask ourselves, “Who are we? What will we become? What are we in his/her eyes?” Afterall one’s identity is what shapes a person’s actions in life and perceptions of reality.

"Identity" (2003) is a psychological thriller directed by James Mangold and written by Michael Cooney. The film stars John Cusack, Ray Liotta, and Amanda Peet, and is inspired by Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None."

Set in a secluded Nevada motel during a heavy rainstorm, "Identity" tells the story of ten strangers who find themselves trapped together. They gradually realize the way they have been drawn together under the circumstances cannot merely be fate, there has to be a bigger reason. The guests include a couple with a child, a police officer, a convicted killer, a married couple, a limo driver, an actress and a prostitute. As they settle into the eerie environment, one by one, the strangers begin to die in gruesome ways. Suspicion mounts, and it becomes clear that the killer is one of the guests. Each character is introduced as an archetype: the tough cop, the innocent woman, the mysterious stranger, and so on.

There’s also a sense of dread that builds as characters’ interactions with one another become increasingly strained and paranoid.

Since the start, the film manages to create an eerie atmosphere of suspense and mystery. Starting from an interview of a murderer, which highlights the challenges he faced as a young child, and how deeply it fractured and distorted his sense of self, to the ending of the film where he finally manages to find his one and only identity, the film guarantees to keep the viewers at the end of their seats the entire time.

While many of the characters appear to be stock characters at first, the story reveals their backstories and psychological baggage, making them more complex and engaging. The film does a great job of slowly peeling back layers of these characters, creating suspense about who can be trusted and who may be hiding dark secrets.

The film explores the concept of “multi-personality disorder” and manages to do an amazing job at it. What initially seems like a straightforward whodunit morphs into something much deeper, involving themes of memory, identity, and psychological trauma. As the story builds to its shocking conclusion, the viewers learn that nothing is as it seems, and the true nature of the events is far more complicated than initially assumed.

The best part of the film is how in the beginning, the premise of a rainy night makes the film look as if it's another regular film, but as the film proceeds and the twists and horror starts coming in, it keeps on getting more intense.

The performances in Identity are strong across the board. John Cusack, brings a surprising depth to his portrayal of Ed Dakota, a limo driver with a shadowy past. Ray Liotta, as a cop named Rhodes, gives a layered performance, capturing the complexities of his character as he keeps on getting increasingly paranoid. The supporting cast, including Amanda Peet, Alfred Molina, and John C. McGinley, also contribute strong performances that help to elevate the film’s psychological complexity.

The film is not just about the basic thrills we expect, but digs deep into the emotional and psychological struggles that drive people to behave in extreme ways.

One of the most remarkable aspects of "Identity" is its unexpected and layered plot twist. The revelation at the end is both shocking and thought-provoking, offering a psychological dimension that elevates the thriller. The film toys with themes of identity, guilt, and the human psyche, making it more than just a simple slasher or whodunit.

As with any psychological thriller, Identity builds toward its big twist, it doesn't disappoint. Without giving away too much, the revelation about the identity of the killer—and the true nature of the events—reframes the entire narrative in a shocking and thought-provoking way. The twist is both surprising and believable within the context of the film, providing a satisfying conclusion to the story’s complex web of themes. The ending is sure to make the mind of the viewers blow away.

The way the film blends the elements of horror, mystery, and psychological drama is nothing short of fantastic. It is a film that keeps the viewers guessing. The viewers may think they know everything about its characters and the events unfolding on screen, but it proves to be otherwise.

The film guarantees thrill, suspense, horror, mystery and a power packed entertainment experience.

According to me, this film's 9.5/10.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AND WATCH WORTHY!
