Max and Caroline are two women from vastly different walks of life who
are forced to navigate adulthood together. Max, who grew up in poverty, is
tough, cynical, and street-smart, while Caroline is a rich girl who loses her
fortune and ends up broke after her father’s financial crimes are exposed. This
mismatch of personalities sets the stage for comedic conflict. They both work
as waitresses at a diner owned by Han Lee, who adds another layer of humor with
his awkward and endearing attempts to manage the diner and his employees.
The heart of the series revolves around Max and Caroline's developing friendship and their shared goal of starting a cupcake business. Though the business venture doesn't take off as planned in the beginning, the pursuit of this dream gives the show a central narrative thread that ties the characters together. Despite frequent setbacks and financial woes, Max and Caroline are determined to find success and improve their lives.
One of the standout aspects of 2 Broke Girls is the dynamic between the two leads, Kat Dennings as Max and Beth Behrs as Caroline. The contrast between the two characters is key to the show’s humor and emotional appeal. Max is sarcastic, jaded, and has a quick wit, while Caroline, despite her downfall, is optimistic, polite, and somewhat naive. Their contrasting personalities create a great comedic push-and-pull. They have excellent chemistry, and their banter provides much of the show’s charm. Max often serves as the voice of reason, while Caroline’s bubbly, somewhat naive nature is a source of both humor and occasional frustration for Max.
This contrast allows for a variety of comedic situations that range from slapstick humor to sharper, more biting exchanges. Despite their differences, the two women grow to care deeply for one another, which gives the show some emotional weight amidst the jokes and zany antics.
2 Broke Girls is known for its fast-paced comedy and sharp one-liners, particularly delivered by Max. Her sarcastic, often self-deprecating humor drives much of the show’s comedy. Many of the jokes are edgy and rely on pop culture references and observational humor. The series also often incorporates slapstick humor, with various characters finding themselves in absurd situations that lead to chaos.
The humor, while sometimes crude and repetitive at times, the quick wit and punchy dialogues makes it genuinely funny, especially for those who appreciate fast-paced, in-your-face humor.
While Max and Caroline take center stage, the supporting characters play a significant role in the show’s comedic landscape. Characters like Oleg (played by Jonathan Kite), the eccentric and often inappropriate cook at the diner, Earl (Garrett Morris), the elderly and sarcastic cashier, and Sophie (Jennifer Coolidge), the sometimes fun and sometimes annoying neighbour, add layers of absurdity and offbeat humor. Han (Matthew Moy), the diner’s owner, is another character who contributes to the show’s comedic moments, often finding himself in awkward or compromising situations.
Although these characters are often used as comedic foils to the two main characters, they help to create a well-rounded ensemble. Their quirky personalities and bizarre behavior provide contrast to the main characters' more grounded but still outrageous interactions.
While 2 Broke Girls initially delivered fresh humor, over the course of six seasons, the series became increasingly repetitive. The jokes, while often funny, rely heavily on established formulas and recurring gags. Max’s sarcasm, Caroline’s naivety, and the exaggerated personalities of the supporting characters lead to predictable punchlines.
Many of the show’s storylines follow a similar structure, with the characters facing obstacles in their attempts to start the cupcake business or manage their personal lives, only to fall into the same traps each time. The repetition of these themes can make the series feel stale.
The viewers were also disappointed by the lack of significant character development. While Max and Caroline’s friendship evolves throughout the show, neither of them experiences significant growth. Max remains the same tough, sarcastic character, while Caroline’s initial naivety becomes less of a defining trait as the series progresses, but not by much. The show doesn’t delve deeply into their personal lives or explore what motivates them beyond their financial struggles. Instead of using the long-running format to offer deeper insights into their personalities, the show relies primarily on surface-level humor and situational comedy.
Another negative point is its stereotypical and somewhat offensive jokes. Jokes about certain cultures, races and minorities have not always been taken whole-heartedly by the viewers. Though we do see the characters often coming together and accepting and loving each other’s cultures.
Despite this, the show managed to have both dark and light humor and at the end gave the viewers some very important lessons. Each of the characters has taught something.
Max teaches being headstrong and her attitude of laughing in the face of problems is something we should all learn from. Caroline teaches determination and her attitude of not backing down no matter what unless she has achieved her aspirations and always standing back up no matter how hard she fell, is motivating. Oleg’s love for his loved ones, Earl’s affection, Sophie always trying to take care of everyone (in her own way) and Han always being kind and innocent, no matter how harsh the world was to him, these characters teach us a lot.
The most important lesson being, ‘family
isn’t what you were born in, but the one you make along the way’.
Finally, though the humor throughout the series felt repetitive, the show does manage to entertain its viewers.
This sitcom is 6/10.
