"I believe that with passion, authenticity, and perseverance, laughter can become both a powerful career and a universal language." – Vijay Choudhary |
Q1. How did you first get started in standup comedy, and what inspired you to pursue it as a career?
AAns. I remember, during my college days, my teachers always appreciated my sense of humor. I was the only one allowed to crack jokes in class. I was in my second year when our institute announced a quiz competition, and everyone was suggesting their names for enrollment. I also went to add my name, but the teacher writing down the names told me, 'I won't write your name here, I've thought of something else for you.' I asked what it was, and he said, 'Prepare an act to entertain the audience.' So, I stayed up that night and wrote a stand-up comedy script. The response was so overwhelming that I got hooked on performing.
Q2. What has been your most memorable performance so far, and why?
Ans. Every performance is memorable in its own way—some because they go well and some because they don’t. My most memorable performances were in the finals of Radio Mirchi Comedy Ka King Kon (because it was my first performance on a big stage) and on Good Night India-Sab Tv (because it was my first TV performance). The atmosphere, the energy of the audience, and the pressure of performing on those stages made them very special. That day, I realized my potential.
Q3. Being a finalist in Radio Mirchi Comedy Ka King Kon, how did that platform shape your comedy career?
Ans. That platform gave me a new identity. It made me realize that I wasn’t just limited to performing for friends and small shows. This experience boosted my confidence and helped me understand comedy more professionally.
Q4. How do you come up with new material for your shows? Do you rely on personal experiences, or do you also draw inspiration from broader social topics?
Most of my comedy material stems from personal experiences, as it feels genuine and connects deeply with the audience. Sharing real-life stories adds a natural authenticity to my performance, making it easier for people to relate. However, I also draw inspiration from societal issues, current events, and the nuances of everyday life. This allows me to explore a wider range of topics and engage with diverse audiences. By blending personal anecdotes with broader social observations, I aim to create content that is both relatable and thought-provoking, ensuring it resonates with people from different backgrounds and perspectives.
Q5. As a performer with millions of views on YouTube and Instagram reels, how important do you think social media is for comedians today?
Ans. Social media is extremely important today. It’s a platform that connects you directly to your audience. Through it, your content can reach millions of people, giving you a global presence and recognition.
Q6. What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced as a standup comedian, and how have you overcome them?
Ans. The biggest challenge is understanding the diverse tastes and expectations of the audience. Humor varies from place to place. I’ve learned that it’s essential to understand audience reactions and stay flexible.
Q7. Can you describe your experience performing on Good Night India on SUB TV? What was that like, and what did you take away from it?
Ans. Performing on Good Night India was a significant milestone in my career. The professional environment and the diversity of the audience gave me an opportunity to refine my content further. This experience inspired me to think and perform on a larger scale. Performing on Good Night India made me realize the significant difference between comedy on TV and the internet. While TV has many content-related restrictions, the internet allows you to present your thoughts freely and without limitations. But performing on both platforms offers a unique experience and enjoyment.
Q8. Having done 500+ shows across India, how do you adjust your performance to cater to different regional audiences?
Ans. As a comedian, I make it a point to understand the language, culture, and sense of humor unique to each region. By incorporating local references and relatable themes, I create a connection that feels personal and authentic, ensuring the audience sees themselves in my jokes
Q9. How do you handle moments when a joke doesn’t land as expected? Do you have a strategy for such situations?
Ans. The best part of the art of comedy is that you have to create humor. Even if your joke doesn’t land properly, you can still create humor at that moment. When a joke doesn’t land, I acknowledge it and quickly make a spontaneous comment to manage the situation. Sometimes, making fun of myself in such moments helps connect better with the audience.
Q10. What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned over the years in the comedy industry, and how has it shaped your approach to performing?
Ans. I’ve learned that honesty and authenticity are the greatest strengths in comedy. When your content is genuine and comes from the heart, it resonates with the audience on a deeper level. People can tell when you’re being real, and that connection is powerful. Besides staying true to yourself, it’s essential to keep learning and evolving. Every performance, whether it goes perfectly or not, teaches you something new. Embracing these lessons and adapting your approach is key to growth. The more you learn, the more your comedy improves, and this continuous journey shapes you into a better performer.
