Q. Akash, you've made a significant mark in the dance world. What initially inspired you to pursue dancing, and how did you get started?
When I started, I was 8 years old. In our villages, there used to be small events, and I used to dance in them. At that time, the reality show Dance India Dance was on air, and seeing Raghav, Dharmesh, and others, I got so inspired. Watching them made me feel like I just wanted to dance. Also, it was kind of a way to avoid studying because, at that time, I didn't like studying at all. I would deliberately dance so that I could get some time for dancing and spend less time studying. So, I kept dancing, and then the people in our village said that I should be sent to perform on TV shows.
At that time, I thought that coming on TV was just a one-step process. I had no idea about the multiple auditions, the 3-4 rounds one has to clear before reaching TV. I used to think, "Okay, I danced, now I’ll directly appear on TV." But then I realized the process. I started going to dance classes, studied it properly, gained knowledge, and learned about different dance styles. Gradually, I started giving auditions for shows.
I also auditioned for Super Dancer Season 1, but I got eliminated in Delhi. I felt really bad at that time. After that, I worked hard, and then I finally made it to Season 2.
Q. Being a finalist on Super Dancer Season 2 was a huge milestone in your career. What was the most memorable moment for you during the competition?
After doing Super Dancer, people got to know who Akash Thapa is. They liked my pranks, and the audience gave me so much love. Definitely, my favorite moment from that time was when my dad came for an episode. Before that, he had never seen me dancing on stage in a show like this. That was the first time he saw me perform, and at that moment, I hugged my dad. I still remember that moment today. So, for me, that was the most favorite and memorable moment of my life.
Q. You’ve recently made a big appearance in Roadies Season 20: Double Cross. How has your experience been on the show, and how does the challenge of Roadies compare to the world of dancing?
I am coming in Roadies Double Cross, and the experience has been absolutely crazy. When I started dancing, Roadies used to air as well, and I used to watch it. I always loved watching entertaining shows, but I never thought that one day I would actually be a part of Roadies. Back then, it was like a dream for me.
My dad once told me that he wanted to see me in this show at least once. Somewhere, his words really inspired me. When he said that, I felt like I had to do it. And now, in Roadies, I am representing my dancing community in some way.
I want the people who know me only for my dancing to see a different side of me—how I talk, my physical strength, and my personality. These are things they had never seen before, and Roadies Double Cross gave me that opportunity. The experience was absolutely crazy, so yeah, it was really good!
Q. Dance is often about personal expression. How do you use dance to tell your own story, and what emotions do you aim to convey through your performances?
Whenever I dance, like when I know my performance is about to happen, I go on stage with the mindset that Akash, this should be your first and last performance—meaning I should dance in such a way that it leaves a lasting impact on people’s minds. I want them to feel like, Wow, this guy came and absolutely killed it!
My performance should have everything—expressions, energy, dance, and that fire. In just three minutes, we have to remember all the steps, execute them perfectly, and give our best. It’s really hard to present everything flawlessly, but I have faith in myself. I trust the years of hard work I’ve put in. So whenever I get the chance to dance, I make sure people feel like yes, there’s something special about him.
Q. You have a large following on social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube. How do you manage your social media presence and keep the audience engaged?
So yes, definitely, my audience on Instagram and YouTube is like my earned wealth. Through Instagram, my audience gets to know what I do—whether it's my work, my hobbies, or my goals—everything is visible there. The way I spend my day, the things I have coming up, I portray all of that through my vlogs.
I have built an audience in such a way that they not only see my work but also get to know my personality. Of course, there are challenges, but yeah, my audience is the most precious thing I have earned. They never forget me, and that means everything to me!
