The New Dark Comedy Culture

Dark comedy, also known as black comedy, is a genre of humor that finds comedy in subjects that are typically considered serious, taboo, or distressing. This can include themes such as death, illness, war, crime, and existential despair. The humor often arises from the juxtaposition of the serious nature of the subject matter with a lighthearted or absurd treatment of it.

Dark comedy in India has gained traction in recent years, with films and shows exploring serious themes like corruption, social issues, and human rights through humor. This culture of using humour to address serious issues has extended to social media as well. Nowadays, people often pass rude and vulgar comments and cover it up claiming it to be comedy. The youth is going crazy for such “Dank” and “Dark” Comedy. One such show which has gained the most amount of limelight is India's Got Latent.

India's Got Latent

India's Got Latent is a popular show on Youtube run by Samay Raina along with other hosts and new guests in every episode. It started since June 14, 2024 and has been grabbing eyeballs and making headlines ever since then. This show is self-admittedly 'an unnecessary reality show'. It became so famous that even others started to copy it in India, Pakistan and tried to make content.

The concept of the show is contestants are given 90 seconds to show their talent and later the judges score them, if their actual score matches with the expected score that they themselves wrote before the act, then they win prize money. This show features raw comedy, vulgar jokes, swear words and often insensitive comments.

Why is it Suddenly Getting Attention ?

The episodes of India's Got Latent often get viral with millions of views and the show enjoys a massive fandom. Although the jokes cracked in the show are applauded by some and hated by others. Recently the show is experiencing infamous fame like never before.

The recent episode hosted by Samay Raina and joined by his fellow YouTuber friends like Ranveer Allahbadia a.k.a Beer Biceps, Apoorva Mukherjee a.k.a Rebel Kid and Ashish Chanchlani has grabbed the most amount of eyeballs and criticisms. Swear words and vulgar comments have been a part of this show, but this time the limit is crossed.

What Actually Happened

Ranveer Allahbadia, Social Media Influencer, is getting called out for his weird question. In the episode, he asks a contestant, “Would you rather watch your parents have sex every night for the rest of your life or join in one time to make it stop and never have to watch it again?” This question by him has made the citizens angry. Everyone on social media is asking what type of morals he has and what this show is trying to promote.

This clip from the show has gone viral and reached the government. Mumbai Police has received a police complaint against Samay Raina, Ranveer Allahabadia, and the organisers of India's Got Latent. Their use of abusive language on the show has also been noted by the Mumbai Women Commission.

Facing Criticism

In response to the incident, Mr. Fadnavis (Maharashtra’s CM) said: “I have come to know about it. I have not seen it yet. Things have been said and presented in a wrong way. Everyone has freedom of speech, but our freedom ends when we encroach upon the freedom of others. In our society, we have made some rules, if someone violates them, it is absolutely wrong, and action should be taken against them.”

Other famous personalities like Neelkant Bakshi (General secretary of Bhartiya Influencers Association), Neelesh Misra (Writer, Storyteller), Rekha Sharma (Former National Commission for Women (NCW) chief and Rajya Sabha MP), Raju Waghmare (Shiv Sena Spokesperson), Himanta Biswa Sarma (Assam’s Chief Minister) have openly called out and criticised Ranveer for his statement.

Apology For His Comment

This comment was criticised by people on the Internet and several police complaints were filed against him and others on the episode. He posted a video on his Instagram saying “I should not have said what I said on India’s Got Talent. I’m sorry.” He further admitted, “My comment wasn’t just inappropriate, it wasn’t even funny. Comedy is not my forte. I personally had a lapse in judgment that wasn’t cool on my part, especially on a platform watched by people of all ages.”

Additionally, he asked that his remark be taken out of the show. The contentious episode has now been removed from YouTube in response to the continued outcry. Following complaints on allegedly offensive language, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) ordered YouTube to take down the video. The entire episode has since been removed by the show's producers due to the ongoing dispute.

Even after removal of the video, the case on these popular Youtubers is still going on. Apart from Ranveer Allahbadia, Apporva Mukherjee is also getting called out for her vulgar language. The whole format of the show is being criticised by the government and the public.

Final Note

India's Got Latent is is legal trouble and the time will tell what happens to the show, Samay Raina, Ranveer Allahbadia and others.

When you are on the Internet, everything you say is available for the world to judge, criticise and if found extremely violating then you are liable for punishment too. Thus, one needs to be extremely careful especially when you are a public figure and claim yourself as a Social Media “Influencer”. Therefore, don't run after abuses and vulgar comments to sound cool or dank, but understand and be a better person.
